Hood hinges
Well its time to clean up my hood hinges. Can I just blast em with aluminum oxide or do I have to use plastic media? Worried the aluminum oxide might stress em or somthing. Paint em up with Krylon semi-flat? No bucks for powder-coating or chrome.

Don't know why you couldn't use sand or aluminum oxide. They aren't going to warp on you from heat and they are just steel. Granted, you'll need to make sure the pivot pins are clean. Semi-flat sounds right, but I'd prime with a self etching primer myself first, just to get a little smoother surface.

I don't know this from personal experience, but I have read that blasting springs makes them lose tension.

I know that blasting metal hardens it and makes it brittle. Dunno if it could hurt the hinges/springs though. Probably not the hinges?

Air and WD 40 should clean em! Little castrol super clean!
Paint em up, and don;t forget to oil the piss out of em!

If it will fit into my blasting cabinet, it gets blasted. No problems ever with doing hinges.
You will need to clean them with a solvent too though, to remove years of buildup of spray lubes put on the hinges by previous owners. Otherwise, your paint will fish eye.

I've blasted many with just sand. Never had a problem and wouldn't hesitate to do more.

I picked up a hinge at a local yard and blasted it with sand. Two thin coats of engine black, and you would swear it was powdercaoted. I've found that if you lay it on too thick it will have a satin-like finish, though.
