cluster swapping
does any one know if there is a cluster that has the nice orange needle ('92?)readout that can be subbed out for the old gray fill cluster in an '89 ?

FullSizeChevy.com has a thread detailing how to do it... actually, there's a guy on ChevyTruckWorld who did it also. It makes a huge difference

You need to find a cluster with tach out of a '91 truck. It is the only year that will work with relative ease. You CAN re-wire half the dash and install a 92-94 cluster, but it's not worth it IMO. Here is a link to the how-to article on 454ss.com on how to swap in the 91 cluster. I did it to my '89 and i love it. Follow that article to the letter accept for one thing, don't buy the "programming chips, P.N.25084374" because 2 come with the programming plug.

Hardest part was finding a 91 cluster with tach. It's not hard to do and those instructions on 454ss.com are very good. You do have to unbolt the dash and tilt it back to get at the cluster wiring connector and swap the 2 (or 3?) wires, but it's not difficult really. The whole deal probably took me an hour once i had the cluster and calibration kit.
