4X4 4L80E in a 2wd 71 sub, any pointers?
Not home yet(from IRAQ), but gathering parts....(can never have enough parts for a project). I have a 4L80E 4X4 trans that I was thinking about putting in my 71 2wd sub. I was hoping someone may have done this swap and could give me a parts list or some pointers on it to make it smooth. I am going home on R&R leave soon and want to work on the ole sub while I am home. I figured a TCM, harness for TCM, crossmember, and a 2wd tailshaft housing for the rear of the 4X4 trans(since i am not using the transfer) ; can this be done? This transmission looks a little different than the one in my 68 Camaro and my 68 already had the 4L80 in it when I bought it! What year vehicle could all this come from? I hope since I got a good deal on the trans(free) it will work with little heartache. Any help would be great.

I believe the 4l80e was available in one tons and perhaps some 3/4 tons starting in 1991. I do know that all V30's (K30) made in '91 with an automatic tranny got the 4l80e, and also the civilian Hummer H1 and the military HMMW both used it. It will need a control module, which is part of the ECM in gas trucks and is a standalone unit in early non-computerized diesel trucks.
