Alternator question

Hey guys!

I just picked up a serpentine belt setup, but the alternator is both fried, and has like 5 wires instead of the three my truck has, it came off an 89 chev pickup. Now, what I need is an alternator that is at least 100 amps, and is of a three wire operation type. What car should I be looking for to get one from?

Most stock alternators are at most 80 amps or so. As far as I know. the 3 wires, one is power, one is guage, and one is field.

80 amps isn't enough juice... My truck is gonna be running a LOT of electronics, which will be sensitive to surges, so I gotta be putting out at least 100 amps at an idle

I bought an adapter from an electrical shop to run a newer style alt on mine when I was running lots of stero and extra lights and stuff. I never installed it, I went with an isolator and another battery. As far as I know its still in the truck. I will look tomorrow and get back with you. (its raining now and dark too). I think I gave like $15 for it if you would be interested in it.

If there isn't a stock 100 amp alternator that runs off a 3 wire setup, I'll probally pick up your adapter, I'll let ya know

No problem. If I can find it I'll snap a pic of it for ya too. Thinking more about it, its just a pigtail and the guy told me/wrote on the package what wires to hook where. I'll let you know more tomorrow. I think with my dual batteries I picked up a 100 amp alt. from NAPA too though. Might have been 90-95 amps though.

Its stopped raining and this is bothering me, I might go look for it anyways.

What about running one of the Powermaster 1 wire alternators or something similar? It seems like using a higher amp alternator will be just as expensive to get.

Good luck finding an alternator that puts out 100 amps at idle.

But, here's a good start (that's 32 POUNDS of alternator, one HUGE mofo that will run 215 amps constant):

If you make do with a little less juice, see here (will bolt up to your existing brackets too):

Hmm... If I think about it, most newer cars will be running just as much, if not more electronics than my truck, so I guess most car's alternator should be fine... I'll go to the wrecking yard and see what I can find.
