Talking It's alive!! My TPI works!!

I started on my TPI about 3 weeks ago. We have been gone every weekend so I haven't been able to work on it much lately. Tonight I fired it up! I have a couple of bugs to work out still but I am pretty pumped

My next project is to pull the harness and clean it up a little more, I am going to remove the air pump harness and the charcoal canister harness.
Then I am going to make my own plug wires so I can run them down and around, like my old ones were so they don't look so ugly. I am running big block wires for now to get the clearance that I need.
Then I need to clean the engine up, it looks pretty bad right now.

i bet you would have noticed a big difference with just the points to HEI swap. looks good

Dallas71, my TPI is from an 86 so I did not have to change the heads. 87 and up had the new style heads, but you can modify the middle bolt holes on the intake so that they will work on the older heads.

Thanks for the compliments guys! I can't wait to get it on the road. I have to re-install the bed, and do a couple of other things. I am just happy to hear it run!

Here is a pic of my FCG tank. I have a rear roll pan, and the hitch sits behind my license plate. As you can see the tank won't sit too low. It should hold around 20 gallons.

its funner (yes funner is a word) with no bed. i drove my friends 77 6 blocks from his dads work to the bodyshop, got all kinds of crossed up leaving the parking lot

i know what u mean

adding a fuel cell/tank to the back doesnt make much difference, especially when there is no bed.

What did the tube between the throttle body and the maf come off of? I am going to be doing the same thing on mine and I need something like that. I know the firebird one will work, but that looks like something else.

What kind of bugs have ya got to work out? Or is it just that you need to clean up the harness, engine etc? I should be firing my TPI up by the end of the month if not earlier...

neonlarry, I got that boot from jagsthatrun.com, that is where I bought my vehicle speed sensor too
Russel, I still need to time it and clean stuff up, I had a problem with the fuiel pump running all of the time (even with the key off) but that was because I bypassed the oil pressure switch, so I fixed that last night.

I have a K&N on the way.
The little lady would throw the camera at me before she took a picture of me burning the tires, but the college kids are back, we could find a pair of ladies to take the picture

It is a mass air system. I used the factory harness. I removed the AC, wiper, and fan wiring. I still have to remove the air pump, egr, and charcoal canister wiring. I am going to pull it out again to do that. I bought the Haynes manual for the Camaro that this came out of and it helped me greatly. It had all of the wiring diagrams with the colors of the wires and everything. That was a huge help.
I had the chip modified to match my engine combo and to make it work without the EGR.

OK I will admit I do not know much when it comes to TPI on our trucks so what all did you purchase to do this upgrade????

what exactly will this do to improve your truck? more HP? better fuel mileage?? Just curious about the swap

dallas 71, I bought an 86 Camaro for $400. Then I removed everything I needed. I tried to use everything I could from the car to keep the cost down. On a side note I parted the car and got $800 for all of the parts, so the extra $400 helped to purchase the FCG tank. I still had to buy some misc parts, like an 02 sensor, knock sensor, air intake ducting, vehicle speed sensor, factory service manual, fuel lines, thermostat, thermostat housing, reprogram the chip, plug wires, throttle cable, and dist. cap and rotor. My FCG tank has the sending unit and intake fuel pump in it.

Dubie, my main reason for doing it was for the fun of it. I found the car for a great deal so that is what started the whole thing. Of course I told my wife it would get better fuel economy and a bunch of other crap, but I am not sure it will. The 700r4 that came out of the car should help a lot there though.
And it looks cool. I have yet to drive it but I will update everyone as to fuel economy and HP when it get so on the road. All I have done is revved it up in the back yard

My best advice would be to get the Haynes manual for that car, they are $75 but worth every penny. I can't even fathom how much time and frustration that thing saved me.
