Hidden Fuel Filler Neck

This is a longshot, I guess. About 12-18 months ago I was searching Ebay and saw a pretty cool truck for sale. I can't remember the year model or the color, but the coolest thing had been fabricated. The driver's side tail light would open up and the gas filler cap/neck was hidden behind it. I think it hinged at the bottom.

I have seen the side marker light method, but I think the tail light method would provide more room and a better angle for the filler neck.

Does anyone have any information on this type of fuel filler install???

I have seen the type of fuel door you are talking about. All of the one's I have seen have been hand built. Hagan's is right down the street from my house. About a year ago, I mentioned they should make the filler kit. I don't know if they took the suggestion but, here are some alternative styles to look at.

My dad's '48 Cadillac has the filler neck under the taillight. To flip it up, you push on the reflector under the taillight.

I think that's what I want to do on my Panel. I think the hinge will be real easy to do, but the latch might be tougher to figure out. I'm thinking of a magnet to hold it closed. Also, sparks are a concern if you forget to turn your lights off. Might have to come up with some type of explosion-proof wiring. I'm gonna have to do both sides 'cause I want two tanks.

I saw one that was neat and clean the other day. This was done on a mid 60's truck it could be done on one of our years. See photo below:

I saw this mod done to a 67 the other day and just thought about posting it (I did not have my camera so no pics. sorry) he had used the magnet out of a camper, the kind that are on the cabinet doors and hold good. he just hinged the side and put the magnet on the other side. The actual filler was a regular sized one he got off of a 94 sunfire I believe it was, and it fit great!!!

I have the marker light fill. The same design should work for the tail light. You would just have to have the tail light tilt up or down. You might have to spend some time trying to find a fill neck with the best possible angle. Figure out how to attach the light lens to the fuel door bracket. Most likely you will have to cut into the corner post. A lot of mods but I can see the possibility.

I saw yours MACKL at the get together in Willow Park. If I can't figure this out, your type will work fine. I also remember that the inlet size could stand to be a bit larger. Thanks everyone.
