i want to mount a tach on the column, but i want to do it without a hose clamp over the bracket. is there a easy way to drill thru the column housing and mount it with bolts? or is there not enough clearance in the column? also any other ideas with pics are greatly appreicated. thanks.

Probably not a solution for you, but I used black heat shrink to cover the hose clamp. One piece long enough to do the threaded strap (heat this one before install), and another larger piece covering the screw head and worm (heat this one post-install). Made the clamp much less noticeable, especially since I had a semi-flat black column.

You can paint the clamp the same color as the column, place rubber under the clamp to protect the paint, cover clamp with electrical tape or even use a wide Zip tie.
Drilling would probably not work.
Besides, the column is actually a pretty bad place for it. At night when you turn on the lights, the tach light will glare in the windshield directly in your line of site.

Yep, the glare sucks. I bought a SunPro that several board members have used in the center hole of their dash. That's where I'll put mine, but for now it's column mounted. The glare sucks bad enough that I'll sometimes put something on top of the tach when driving at night.

LonghornJeff came to the Ohio board meet driving his new rig all night. he just tossed his ball cap over the tach as soon as the headlights came on.

it's a little out of the way, but a decent place I've found to mount the tach where you can keep tabs on engine speed is under the dash, far enough out from the steering column to see it around the wheel. I have it like this on the Olds. If I feel a hitch or realize that I haven't kicked it into OD, it's good for that. It's also good for if I'm going all out, I can glance at it every once in a while to make sure it's not high enough to blow up.

If the tach's bezel is deep enough, you might be able to either bend the bracket slightly or shim it with a wedge enough to tilt the tach forward and kill the reflection. I had the problem on my '72, and a small wedge of old tire tread did the trick, and doesn't show or slip out.

I guess you could fashion some kind of hood, as well.

i had thought at one point about making a hood mounted tach, i kinda think it would be cool and deffinatly different.

my 5 inch autometer with shift light is mounted off the right side of the steering column can still see it just just and i have it centered so i can still see the oil pressure and fuel gauge i have no problem whatsoever unless i peg it with the cap off of the shift light but other than that its the best spot i found

Those are kinda neat and all...but I wouldn't want to use it if I was actuially pushing my motor and needed an acurate guage to moniter the engine....it don't even go as high as a stock motor spins.

The old Super Sun has been pop riveted on my column for over 18 yrs. never had a problem.
