Fuel Filter: Supposed to always be FULL right? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I've been noticing this more and more lately. At idle, my fuel filter will have BARELY any gas in it. This means there's a restriction in the line somewhere right? It can't be between the pump & carb, cuz that's brand new rubber hose, and it can't be the pump, cuz THAT's new also (Holley 80gph mechanical) So it has to be between the tank & carb right?

I don't know if it should be full or not but mine is also not full.

mine used to not be full than my valve for the dual tanks stopped working since fixing that its always full now and i had to adjust my carburetor afterwards too

The only way the filter can be totally full is if the outlet is at the very top. If the filter housing is laying on its side then the fuel will fill up to the top of the outlet opening. If the filter outlet is below the inlet it may look like there's hardly any fuel in it. This is normal.

I used to run a mechanical pump and it would be low to almost emtpy at times but if i ran the engine wide open for awhile it would be plum full.

I converted over to an electric pump and it stays full

I'm considering doing this. I WOULD say it would need to STAY full..but that's what the bowl's are for.

Yea its not a nessacity I ran mine on a engine driven 81 camaro w350 and ac fuel pump has a larger resiovoir Other than that is stock as far as i know.

It ran fine just had the space in the filter when it idled and hadnt been driven much,

Mines mounted horizontally and it has barely any gas in it at idle too.

Oh my, this is a oldie!
This question has been around 40 years (that I know of).

I have noticed this on many engines I have come across and it seems to be a normal thing. Happens on my lawnmowers, welding machines, and all the cars with glass filter bowls that I have.

Bottom line.........don't worry about it if it runs. Worry when it comes "uncranked".
