Am I getting Hosed? SM465 4speed
I've got a 71 GMC C3500 1Ton Dually 350 w/sm465 4 speed. My tranny locked up in 2nd gear so I pulled it and dropped it off to my local garage to have it rebuilt. Now the Machanic calls and says he can't order new syncros for it and is now looking for some good used ones and he thinks he has some laying around if he can find them.
Now it's my understanding that the SM465 was used from 1968 to about 1991 so how can syncros not be avalible for it, NAPA or somebody must have parts for it? Am I getting taken for a ride here? |

I do believe he's full of crap. For example:
CHA Industries Transmission Exchange Company (eBay store) Drivetrain Specialists of Las Vegas S&S Truck Parts The list goes on and on. Hope this helps!

A buddy of mine has rebuilt 4 ( that I know of ) SM 465 trannys at home. I believe he was able to have NAPA order all the parts he needed. I'm off work next week. I'll go see him and ask.

that is b.s.
it could be a 420, although the last official year was '67, but I have heard of it being in a few '68s. Is your reverse on the passenger or driver side of the shifting pattern, and are there 2 or 1 pto covers? If its the passenger side reverse and 2 pto covers, its a 465.

Synchros
First of all, what makes him think the synchros are bad ? Did it grind going between 2 & 3, or 3 & 4 ? My wife manages to lock one of mine up occasionally. I just pull the stick out, reach down inside & move the slider so everything is back into neutral & reinsert the stick. When the bottom of the stick (nylon) is worn out, it'll come out of the shifting fork, but won't go back in. The other 4x4 is a low mile truck & she never locks that one up.

I have a good used 465 that you can have for a lot less than it would take to rebuild that one. Tranny guys are like women, once you sniff a lie---run like hell because you've already spent to much.

I had a T221 Rockwell transfer case and a SM420 in a 1969 GMC 3/4 4x4 actually...it was all correct....but Canada's truck assembly plant in Oshawa sometimes used up the older US parts it seems.

I have seen complete 465 rebuild kits for 465 on e bay for a buy it now price of $105, that included bearings, gaskets, synchros, shims, etc.. Look under parts and enter transmissions then search for chevy.
