Need an answer, quick!
I need to change the flywheel on my truck(350, th350). How hard is it to get the tranny out? I have not front clip on. Do I have to drop the cross member? What is the easiest way to do it?
The flywheel was stripped by the starter gear. The starter is a "new" reman that I just put in there. Are shims generally used? How do I know how many? I need some answers tonight because I won't have a computer tomorrow when I am working on it... Thanks

tranny is pretty easy to get out just disconect any lines wires going to it, unbolt it, and yes you will need to take the cross member out to get the tranny out, will also need to drop the drive shaft. oh make sure you use a good floor jack to lower the tranny, they are heavy and you sure dont want one falling on you.
as far as shims go, i think some needed shims but not sure about how many you will need.

OK, thanks. What will be holding up the rear of the engine once the tranny is out? Do I need to stick a jack under it or something?

yes, use a jack and a block of wood under the oil pan to support the engine.

To change a flex plate, I just slide the tranny back an inch or so, supporting the transmission with long bolts. The crossmember can stay in place, but the engine still needs to be supported. The torque converter can be moved rearward for additional clearance. The cooler lines usually have enough stretch in them to accommodate moving the tranny without disconnecting them.

since you have the front clip off i'd just pull the whole unit motor/tranny and it will be alot easier to do the change and to set the starter if it needs shimming
