front park lights?

my 67 gmc is just about ready to roll, I had to use a new light switch, I tried one from a 77 van, one from a 69 gm 1/2 ton. the front park lights only work on the park position, when the headlights go on, they go off?? any suggestions as to why?

Pre-'68 U.S. cars only had parking lights in the parking light switch position. They are supposed to turn off when the headlights are on.

Yup, jim hit the nail on the head.
Someone on here had written up a thread on how to make them work like a post 67...but it has been a couple years, and I have NFC who it was.

I bet this drives the younger generation at the inspection stations crazy.

I remember one time I got my truck inspected, the mechanic was tapping on my side lenses trying to get them to come on. (1969, just reflectors, no lights)

Don't feel bad Purple, No annual inspections in California either. You can drive any piece of junk you want here as long as it doesn't pollute. And you can get away with that if it is pre 76.

Yes, unfortunatly, (or fortunatly depending on how you look at it) here in Pennsylvania, there is a yearly safety inspection. They check things such as lights, wipers, horn, exhaust, brakes, front end wear, etc.

Having lived here my whole life, I'm used to it. Having worked as a mechanic a long time ago, I've seen how most people neglect their cars. Some people replace brakes when they start grinding!!! I'm surprised there aren't huge amount of accidents in states that don't require it due to bad brakes, worn steering/suspension parts, etc.

One nice thing is cars with a classic or antique tag are exempt. Very leanient of this state considering how tough they are on these matters.
