Hot drag radials and stock Gov-Lock rear = BOOM

This is what I did on motor tonight LOL. Launched it easy took it to 6200 and slammed 2nd gear. I thought I left a pile of something behind me. Good thing I was only a few blocks from home. I didn't feel like pulling the pan but it definatly grenaded the locker, put a nice hole in the diff cover and it wouldn't move an inch in just free spins the drive shaft.

Usually trucks pull Camaros. Not tonight hahaha. Actually it's not funny. Anyone got a detroit for sale?

Yeah, and it's usually the LS1 Camaros that scatter the rear end all over the place...nice work!

There were 2 different gov-locs that I know of. The first one they came out with was junk. The second one was better junk. I had one in my 12 bolt for several years (better junk) and it lasted until I got rid of the 12 bolt and went to 3/4's. It seen a lot of mud pits and off roading but I wasn't really into hole shots.

Gov Locs are built to handle S10s.

Some of the drag racers I know affectionately refer to them as time bombs

Naw I was just "testing" out these new BFG drags around the block. They obviously hook alot harder on the street than my M/T ET streets did. Course they are pretty much monsters at 325/50R15's...

The Gov-lock usually works just fine. The problem is that when you get a lot of tire spin and a lot of torque (with a 10 or 12 bolt) when the locker locks up it breaks the carrier bearing cap bolts and then all hell breaks loose.

I have never seen one grenade the main caps. but I have seen a ton of them explode the "clock works" crap inside. This inturn goes through the ring and pinion, bearings, etc.........
I suppose you could get a big enough piece going through all of this to pop the main caps, but I have never seen it. It certainly wouldn't be the start of the equation.
Gov-Locs are barely adequate for totally stock vehicles driven nicely. Once you introduce more horsepower, a big foot, and/or better traction in the form of bigger tires, they go away quickly.
Actually a stock "open" differential is stronger but you don't get the "posi" effect.
BTW, they do NOT actually "lock" as in a true locker type diff. They are a clutch type unit that has a centrifugal mechanism that controls the pressure to the clutches. It is not supposed to do anything until there is a certain amount of difference between the tire's speed from one side to the other. It also only works below a certain speed. Once the unit's RPMs enguage the centrifugal parts, there is no "lock".

Couldn't agree more! Looks great. Eventually I'd like to do a similar setup. Be fun to fabricate it all at home too...

I agree you may have to lose the 12 bolt with big power but I wouldn't give up my trailing arms for a 4link. I know for a fact that 67 dragtruck has been as fast as I want to go with trailing arms and coilovers(5.32 eighth mile) on a 10.5w slick I might add!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
