Buick 350 into GMC 4x4?
I have actually got 2 good running buick 350's from 1970 skylarks and I have a 68 GMC 3/4 ton that needs a V8. Is it possible to put the buick engine in? They put out almost 300 HP but I guess the main concern is mating it to a trans, its an NP205 in there now will it bolt up? I have a TH350 auto on the 350 but mating that to a 4x4, hard? Engine mounts are the other concern.
I have almost no cash to spend so getting a chevy v8 is out of the question unless you want to trade....

I got a Buick 350 in my 69 Chevy SWB Step Side. Its 2WD so I can't help you on the transfer case side. Motor mounts I fabricated from anle iron, square tube, and plate steel. Not a big deal if you can weld or have them welded.
I do know that the trans bolt up is different on the Buick, Olds, and Pontiac....but basically the rest of the trans is the same. Perhaps you can take the tail housing from your current 350 and tranfer it to a B.O.P. trans? My Buick 350 is a runnin' SOB ! ! Give it a try....I did and don't regret it other than the "higher cost" of Buick V-8 parts ! |

ya in my case if I had a prob I have another buick 350 I could plop in. But you are saying it won't bolt up like the chevy 350 would to my trans which is an NP205 4 spd?
Good to hear someone did it.

[QUOTE=sdmahr] Perhaps you can take the tail housing from your current 350
4x4 automatics do not have a tailhousing, bolts to the tranfer case. He needs to find an old Chevy 4x4 that came with an diesel ( oldsmobile Block ) not the Chevy diesel and then the Buick motor will work. The olds mounts also bolt up to Buick and in a 79 Chevy the holes were already in the motor towers to accept the olds motor mounts. The easiest solution is too buy the adapter plate for the tranny bolt pattern, I think around 80 bucks. Than you could install Buick, Pontiac, Olds, or Caddy engines in your Auto 4x4. Way harder to do on a 4 speed 4x4. I need to find an old bellhousing so I can put another 500 Caddy to work! Good luck, Buick 350 is a fine truck motor, more torque than Chevy. Mike

back again
I am getting more serious about trying this, With all the help you guys have been I am unclear on one thing, what if I Used the th350 thats currently on my buick engine, how could I get that hooked up properly to the transfer case?
If I figured that out I would just have mounts for teh engine and trans to worry about, (and maybe a drive shaft).

If I'm thinking right, the buick and the olds use the same motor mount, I know they use the same bell housing. The 5.7L diesel was a glorified 350 Olds. I'd find a early 80's or late 70's 5.7 diesel pickup in 4x4 and rob the tranny and motor mounts out of that, that would solve your problem with the transfer case. the motor mounts would still need some massaging to work right.

You can get a bellhousing off a Buick,Olds,or Pontiac that will work in that application.

It sounds like you'd just have to do a little tranny work. A BOP th350 case would bolt up to the engine. You'd need to rob the th350 output shaft out of an original 4x4 th350. As long as you're going through all that you may as well get a 700r4 that fits the back of that engine and put an advanced adapters output shaft in that transmission. Then you'd have the best of all worlds.

700r4 came in chevy bellhousing only I think. Yes, use your turbo 350 case, and the ouput shaft from the chevy tranny. Trans wil have to be disassembled to do the swap, might as well freshen it up while in there, but that could be expensive.

transmission/disassambled...
How disassembled? I haven't taken anything apart on a transmission before, I'm confident elsewhere but am I just taking off the output shaft from the existing (SM465)manual trans and putting it onto the back of the th350, (if I want the th350?)
OR Taking the bellhousing off the th350 and putting it on a 700r4(if I want a 700r4) OR Taking the bellhousing off the th350 and putting it on the manual (SM465) existing in the truck, (if I want to keep the manual.) (Not to mention mounting things to the truck) Thanks I'm sure I'll need help along the way.

If this is true I can just keep everything and put an adapter plate in and do motor mounts? That sounds great, anyone know where I can get an adapter plate from a 1969 buick 350 to an SM465 in a 68 GMC?

Here's a plate kit with spacers to adapt chevy to BOP block. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...sPageName=WDVW i'm not affiliated with the seller but the cheapest price I've seen for a set up so far. I know board member c-1972 bought the exact same setup, from same seller, to bolt up to a caddy motor. maybe pm him to see how he made out. if going manual then an older BOP manual bellhousing should be fine with the sm465.

Why not just use a 200R4 tranny instead. easier to hook to the NP205, better overdrive ratio, and many came with a dual bolt pattern, Chevy and BOP. The one in my Monte SS has the dual bolt pattern. They also used this tranny in Grand Nationals, Cutlasses, and Grand Prixs. Built correctly, it can be stronger than the 700. I am putting about 300hp through my stock one right now.

but, but but...
To hook up to the factory adapter you need to worry about the BACK of the transmission. The "adapter" in a 4x4 is a factory piece. I'm guessing here but I bet you could use a factory BOP th350. Take the tailhousing off. Install the output shaft from a factory 4x4 th350 transmission into the BOP th350. Then bolt the BOP th350 with no tailhousing and 4x4 output shaft to the factory np205 to th350 adapter. I'm not sure if a 4x4 output shaft exists for a 200-4r transmission.

Use a divorced transfercase, get a NP205 from a 69-74 dodge.
