Question about seat fitment - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I know this has probably been addressed before but I can't seem to find it.

When putting late model Chevy seats into a 67-72 truck, do you have to relocate the tank before they will fit and still have legroom, or does relocating the tank just give you some extra adjustment for the seat?

And while I have your attention, how about (God forbid) late model Ford seats. There are some nice ones out there that seem to be going cheaper than the Chevy stuff. Will they work without much problem?

I just installed '02 silverado seats last weekend. I'm 6' and if I drove long distances I'd be a little uncomfortable but since I mostly just buzz around town it's ok. Plan on the truck being about 4 shades darker grey than what the seats are.

As far as fitting, I had to drill all new holes but that wasn't a problem.

Oh ya - as far as the tank, someone that has removed theirs could answer this better but I think it would allow a bit more room, however I'd think you'd sitting almost straight up. Although I plan relocating mine just cuz I want it out of the cab.

Hey Jimbo, what did you do for the mounts on the seat? did you have to fabricate or just drill some new holes?

I just drilled new holes - I believe I used a size 8 bolts with good size washers on both sides. The seat cushions only have two nuts holding them in place, so you can remove the bottom cushions with ease and that gives you room to place and drill the new brackets with ease. I was going to close up the original holes but I think I'll just put the original bolts back and call it a done deal, that'll make it easy if ever I want to go back to the bench style.

thanks jimbo, did you shim them up to get a cushion height that was right or do they seem to fit just right on the floor. Im bout 6 foot, with the stock seat it feels like im ridin low.

Here's the two side-by-side. I didn't like the late model because the backs are so thick, that you end up too close to the steering wheel. I sold them to a guy with a blazer...lots of room.

to finish answering your question Nixon, it does'nt matter if you relocate the tank or not, it won't affect your seat adjustment or gain you any leg room. the seatback is sloped back about +/- 15 degrees and the tank is about the same. most remove the tank for extra space of various reasons or to get the explosives filled vessel from their passenger area. if you use a seat from an 88 to 94 chevy truck you will gain a few inches (maybe 4") as the seatback is thinner than 67-72 seatbacks. 95 up seatbacks are thicker than 67-72's.

nixon I don't know if jimbo's center seat folds down to make an arm rest (some do some don't) I have about the same seat and mine does fold an it hits the tank but I was going to get rid of it anyway.

Sorry about the way that post sounds I was talking about getting rid of the TANK and I did. I love the seat I bought it for 200.00 out of a 2000 extended cab.

Thanks for the info guys. Anybody out there even contemplated using Ford (gasp) seats. It seems from the responses that seat back thickness is the issue. My problem is that I really want to use seats with integrated shoulder belts. The Ford ones seem cheaper on eBay and elsewhere, probably because they aren't in as great a demand. All the versions with integrated belts have thicker backrests though.
