beds or boxes

Just an observation. But I've noticed on here, and in magazines published in the states, everyone refers to that thing on the back of a truck as a "bed". In the part of Canada where I live Saskatoon, Saskatchewan,,,( go ahead try and say it) everyone I talk to calls them "boxes". Not trying to stirr anything up,, just an observation.

Beds, sometimes "box, but always prefix with "pickup" as in pickup box.

I've heard:
Throw it in the bed
Throw it in the pickup box
Flatbed

But never

Throw it in the box.
Flatbox

Boxes belong at shipping stores, bags belong in grocery stores

Talking

Throwing it in the box is good too. Especially on a nice cold night with lots of blankets.

Around these parts, it's pretty simple. The "bed" is whatever's behind the cab of the truck, and "boxes" are what you put in/on the "bed". - JK...

Actually, I suspect it's related to a larger population of bigger/heavier trucks in common/personal use, like farms, ranches, etc. Many of them have "flatbeds", and calling them boxes just wouldn't work.

Anyway, interesting question...SSOW

you can put a box in bed ( rear of truck)
you can put a bed in a box (same thing)
how about we call it a cargo carrying enclosure? but then again that wouldnt be right if you had already put a bed in your box.
oh!, oh!, oh!, I got an idea! lets call it a bex. or even better yet call it a bod. I have a steel bod!
ok, now I'm confused. what were we talking about?

The trucks with a big box on the back are box trucks but the pick-up bed is a place to haul boxes.
