External voltage regulator question.
It seemed a bit odd to me that the housing of the voltage reg is insulated from ground by some little rubber grommets where it bolts to the rad support, then there is a little wire bolted to the screw that holds the housing on that goes to ground. Is the reg housing supposed to be grounded or not? I'm just wondering because I just replaced my reg and the new one tried to boil my battery and pop all my lights. The old one was allowing current to fluctuate.
So, is that ground wire supposed to be there? |

I believe the regulater needs a ground. If I remember right there was a metal ground strap that one of the bolts went through on the insulator. John

The ground wire is essential for the regulator to work otherwise it can fry your battery. The regulator bleeds off excess charge to ground through the wire.
The regulator is mounted on rubber "feet" to minimize vibration to the regulator. Jim |

Oh, and an interesting thing too....if you hook your horn wire onto the terminal on the external regulator, the dash lights will come on when you depress the horn button. Neat huh?
The Dope Smoking Old Man (previous owner) had it hooked like that...he was a total idiot. |
