Changing Motor Mounts, How Tough?

I have a 71 Chevy long bed with a 350. The motor mounts need changing. How tough is this to do? Ive never done it before, but Ive done just about everything else myself on this truck so I figure I might as well try this too.

What is involved in changing out motor mounts? Is this a 2 man job or is one person sufficient enough? Also is there someplace on the web that gives a clear easy to follow set of instructions on how this is done?

The way that i changed mine was to unbold them from the frame. Used a come along that was attached to a tree and pulled the motor up then unbolted the mounts and put the new ones on. Lowered the engine back down and bolted it back to the frame. I thought it was quite simple just takes time. Dont pull the engine up to high youll put some things into a bind.

Depends on your mainifolds. My truck has the "center-dump" type with 2 1/4" dual exhaust and they were right in the way. It can be a pain, but all it really takes is time and patience. Also, my tranny lines and fuel pump made passenger side difficult. Driver side was really easy. NOTE: new mounts will slighty raise motor, they aren't old and "squished", so you may want to loosen the metal brackets on the frame to ease installation. Good luck and be patient!

So I dont need to unbolt the tranny from the engine or anything like that?

My engine is a 350 with headers. I dont know if the motor mounts are actually bad, its just that on the drivers side the bolts happened to come out and that put my power steering in a bind and my PS bracket broke. I got the braket fabricated where it was broke and want to put it back on but the bolt holes dont line up with the motor mount.

I figured if I was going to have to do something drastic like lift the motor or jack the motor up to fix that one side, then I might as well go ahead and replace the motor mounts.

I replace my truck's motor mounts by myself using an engine hoist. I did not have to unbolt the tranny, it was easy.

using the old style mounts changing them is a PAIN IN THE BUTT! change over to the 80-87 style....one bolt through the mount from the motor and your done.

I have used a floor jack under the oil pan. Place a 2x6 between the jack and the pan to keep from distorting the pan. Loosen all bolts and then raise the engine just enough to remove and replace the mounts.

These trucks are cake to work on. The mounts are about the most straight forward of any vehicles on the road.

There are cars out there that take 1/2 a day for a professional mechanic to change the mounts on using a hoist, air tools, and a lot of experience.

On one of these trucks, a floor jack, a pry bar, and a basic 3/8 drive socket set should get you going in an hour or two.

Kevin, could you post a basic motor mount R&R ? Floor Jack sounds better then engine hoist ? We all appreciate your No Nonsense approach to repairing things. I need to change them on a K-10 this summer.....thanks
