will it fit?
i need to get some shift linkage for my truck..i have part of the setup but cant find the rest of it. i found one of those universal setups like lokar makes and wanted to know if it will work for me? i have a 400 small block in the I6 position and TH350...how much farther back does it sit in the I6 position than in the V8 position?

Are you trying to keep the shifter on the column?If so,I don`t know anyone that`s had any luck with that.A floor shifter would be an easy solution.I think it`s about 2-2 1/2".Most people get a custom-made(stretched)1pc.driveshaft and keep the motor forward.Auto linkage works and access to distributor is normal.

Yes, the Lokar shift rod kit will work with your engine positioning if you don't want to use stock linkage on your truck.
This question would have gotten better response on the question board rather than the parts board.

It`s a little confusing,at least for me right now,trying to explain.Auto uses 2pc driveshaft.3spd uses 1 pc.When swapping-out the I6/3spd for V8/auto,if you don`t want the motor back into the firewall,you need to move the frame mounts forward to V8 position(2+").Then the 1pc driveshaft needs stretched,linkage OK.If V8 mounted in I6 position to make 1pc driveshaft work,linkage is too short and engine is tight to firewall.I guess it`s the relation from the motor mounts to back of engine being different.Although the I6 is longer, the motor mounts must be located a shorter distance forward from the bellhousing.

I'm well versed on different engine positions and swaps. I have done the V8 swap into the I6 position plenty of times.
I also know the differences between the I6 frame stands, small block frame stands, and the big block frame stands. I know which set of frame holes each different frame stand fits into. The linkage still works even with the V8 engine in the back set of holes (6 cylinder position). It doesn't matter whether you're using a V8 or an inline 6 cylinder, the transmission and frame stands are in the stock I6 position. The stock I6 trucks with auto transmissions had column shift linkages. It works. I have done it personally. You might do a little search, you'll find a lot of articles and posts by me concerning swaps. I most recently did a 70 model truck buildup over the last year. I started with a 6 cylinder 3 speed no option truck and converted it to a big block, automatic, tilt, disc brake, power steering truck. A search under my user name will turn up plenty of reading and pictures.

The distance from the back of the engine to the motor mounts is the same for a 250 six cylinder or a small block. The 292 inline 6 cylinder has a forward offset right side mount. It's a particular 292 quirk.
When you pull out the 250 and swap the V8 into the 6 cylinder position, you don't need to modify the engine mounts in any way. Simply unbolt the rubber mounts off of the 6 cylinder and bolt them to the V8 block. Now, set the V8 down onto the 6 cylinder frame stands and bolt it in using the original bolts. The transmission will be exactly where it needs to be. No moving required. No linkage movement required either.

All sounds good. Arent you basically describing the position that is used with K series ( 4x4 ) trucks that are v8? The relation of the shift lever on the steering column with the lever mount for the automatic transmission changes depending on what set of mounts you utilize, v8 or I6. My first cart in the late 70's was a 67 c-10 that was originally a 6, and converted to a v8 that sat so far back against the firewall that you would swear it could touch. It however was a 3-spd manual, and still had the original linkage. It wasnt untill I had the need for a fan shroud that I discovered the K series v8's were istalled in this fasion from the factory. Maybe a blazer auto linkage would work? I have never had a 4x4 so I'll bow out now. Best of luck. Tim
