Tire carrier with tailgate down?
Does anyone have pics, links, illustrations, ideas, etc., for a spare tire carrier that can be used with the tailgate down?
I currently have a stock, swing-away carrier in excellent condition, however, I've never actually had a tire on there. I'm thinking of getting rid of it when I paint my rig (hopefully this spring) because 1.) I'm not sure it's strong enough for a 33-35" tire, but mostly 2.) I can't drop the gate with it on. I thought about fabbing one up and attaching it through the gate, but I haven't really come up with any specifics. |

I run 35" SSR swampers so i too needed someting strong to hold the wight. So I built one. It swings out of the way so you can drop the tailgate. I was able to mount my Highlift to it also. Then added a CB antenna and bottle opener
The eye bolt is my latch, basically before I caped the ends of the bumper I welded a big nut inside. Then put a bugger weld on the eyebolt it self so it cannot come out of the gate. look at the bottom corner of the swing out gate. I used a trailer spindal w/bearings for the piviot point. Simply welded the 2x2 square tubing to it. very solid and sofar has worked very well. Good Luck Burt

Why can't you drop the tail gate with your swing away? I have done it a few times in my '72 while hauling loads longer than the bed of my truck. I have a "safety" cable running from the bracket on the tail gate to the swing away so the tail gate can't open too far. When driving (short distances only) with the tail gate open, I also tie a rope or bungie cords to the swing away to keep it up against the open gate. It worked just fine. I am running the stock tires on stock wheels so I don't know if 35's would cause the same problem.

Anyone know how big of tires you can run on the factory wing away carrier? I'm running 33's and I have a carrier I am thinking of putting on. I didn't even think about the tire being too big or heavy.

Hey easy_13. If you do decide to get rid of your tire carrier, I want to be first in line.
We do like bouncy said and tie the thing when we move with the tail gate down. Be sure to hang a 'red flag' off the end though. We have removed it for longer trips and put it back later. Bobbi |

I have read here and on ColoradoK5.com that 35" tire is the max for the stock carrier. I don't know if that means that smaller is recommended and you are pushing your luck with a 35, or if that is a conservative limit. I've got one waiting to go on my '69 and I run 35's on it.
