Another Long bed vs short bed
I didn't want to hi-jack Peregines' thread on the looks of short bed vs long bed so I am starting another about traction.
Which one would hook better (for drag racing)? It seems like the short would have better weight transfer but the long has more weight to begin with.

You don't see them making funny cars shorter.

A shortbed would hook alot better than a longbed in most cases depending on suspension set up. If the suspensions were identical shortbed all the way IMHO.
Funny cars are not even part of the equation as they are setup totally different with the engine alot further back than stock.... They are longer for stability at speed. Regards, Stace |

A long bed will track better, that much I know. I might be biased, but I'd say the LB would have the best weight transfer, just because there is more weight shifting to the rear. But honestly, I don't have a problem. When I launch my truck from first gear there is just this little chirp of the rears and then they stick like glue. MY friend Ranger I always race around with just spins the tires horrible when he gets on the gas. Of course, I have 80s Vette rims with huge meats in the back. And 300 pounds of sand for winter.

After I thought about it, the SB would probably have better transfer. But, I still support my LB theory.

Think about it like a Gasser VS Rail..
It's going to take More HP to set a longbed up on it's front end.. It's the rear tires that become the fulcrum point. Now you do the Physics and Math.. |

If i let out the clutch normal in my long bed and then punch it, it hooks just fine. I might hear a churp now and then but im only pushing about 300 hp and 327 ft. lbs. of torque followed by a m20 muncie 4spd and a 12bolt possi rearend. when i roll the clutch and punch it i cant seem to get the wheels to stop spinning. in my dads truck (1970 CST Short Wide) if i punch it, it seems to just churp but thats because he doesnt have a lot of hp. my truck is way faster. but dont tell him i said that, hes got a BB thats jumpin in his truck over x-mas break that will change all that. but i dont believe that it matters too much about short or long bed, i think it all depends on how much hp and what kind of tires you are using like size width slicks...

I always thought that longbeds would hook better because of the weight transfer. This is really the first time I've read about people thinking short beds had better traction. This and the other lwb vs swb thread. |

Thanks! I'm glad I got to have it pretty much done.
Yeah I couldn't ever see my goals of pulling the wheels with the long bed so... chop chop.
