Door problem ( Clunk)

I went to shut the drivers door the other day and I heard a clunk down inside the door ( something fell) and now the door won't stay closed. The wheel part of the latching mechanism on the door now spins around freely and the inside door handle seems to have nothing hooked up to it. When I get inside, what should I be looking for???
Thanks,
Dave

It sounds like the pawl fell off of the door latch. The pawl is the part that hooks the roller so it will not rotate when the door is shut.

You will probably want to get another latch.

Jim may be right. You have to pull the door panel off. Also look for a broken spring on the latch assembly. The pawl would make that clunk noise when it fell. If the pawl is gone you will not be able to lock and unlock the door. Check that first and report back.

The door wouldn't lock fully before this if that tells you guys anything. I will get in there before too long. Right now the front end is up on jack stands for a ring and pinion change....seals.... etc.
