3 on the tree problem
I have a 68 gmc with 3 0n the tree and when its cold out its realy hard to shift into first and reverse. So hard that yesturday I broke my shift lever. How can I fix this problem and where can I get parts.

You probobly have some crud built up in the column. Clean it out and spray some Tri Flow on all the moving parts. Does the trick on the wife's '63.

i did the exact same thing on my 69 and i cleaned the column out and it works great now. if you want to permanently fix the problem go with a floor shifter thats what i eventually did and i havent regreted it yet

if you cant get it fixed let me no.i might be parting out a 71 3 speed that runs and shifts perfect friday.im in ct,and if you need the column and all the shifter parts i will take 10 plus the shipping.only if its parted out.lol

How did you finally fix this? Mine is stuck also. It also appeared to start happening when it started getting cold.

My grease was gummed up on the top between the shift socket and column. Remove steering wheel and turn signal unit and wires remove shift lever then the socket. Clean and lube with white grease and your're good to go.

Clean the unit up as stated.You might also find that the shifter bushings on the shift arms of the tranny are shot.I replaced mine and it made a huge difference in the tightness of the shifts also.
