There is a yard up here that has a 400 with a standard behind it. It's the only one I've ever seen still in a junkyard. I can get the whole motor for $150 I think. You can buy new ones, last I checked they where a tad over $100. I've heard of taking another flywheel and balancing it, but never checked into it.

i read a article one time and it said that chevy put a standard trans behind a small block 400 for the first half of 1970 but that is the only time i have ever heard that. were did you see those flywheels for $100? i'll just buy one of those.

They used to have 400 flywheels for $99.99. I'm sure they've raised their prices some but shouldn't be too much.

I've ordered alot of parts from them over the years. Never had a problem yet. As a matter of fact that's where I got my 454 flywheel.
They'll work with ya on stuff like rebuild kits that you want a different part than what normally comes with it. They just swap the parts in and add, (or subtract), the difference in price. Alot of places won't do that.

If ya got a nuetral balance (350,etc.)flywheel,a local driveline and/or axle shop should be able to hook you up with a balance plate that just bolts between your flywheel and crank.The last one I bought (about 2 years ago) set me back about $35

Those balance plates work pretty good too. For a high rpm motor you should have the rotating assembly balanced with the plate if you're gonna use one but I had one one my 383 along time ago and I turned it up around 6500 a few times with out very much vibration.

Edit; Decided I'd better keep the plate. I forgot my wife's truck has a 400 in it.

We just built a 383 in the shop where I work an we used a balance plate, Pioneer part number FB2, it should cost around $25. We also used a "Scat" new 383 crank and I would not reccomend this to any one. We had to take 300 grams out of each end so the rotating assy. before it would balance.

has anyone ever used that flywheel? part #gs9202, i am just curious. i'm putting this motor in a 3/4 ton 4x4 and i want to use the big chevy clutch.

I don't remember the part # for my 454 flywheel but I use a 12in clutch with it. I'd guess you could with the 400 version also. Just a guess though.

If you're looking towards the plate method, I just stumbled across the plate in speedwaymotors book, (brand new, just got it today!), for $12.95!
Man, the price on these things have dropped since I bought mine. I paid almost $40 for mine!

i think i'm gonna go the flywheel way. i don't even have any 350 flywheels left. so i would have to buy one of those then have it turned then buy the plate. heck i just think i would be better off with a flywheel anaway.
