Stock 72 rear bumper?
Before I start, I will say that I should probably have pictures for this, but unfortunately I haven't bought a digital camera yet. Anyways, what I'm wondering is what did a 72 custom deluxe come with for a stock rear bumper. Mine has a checkerplate top that folds up at the back and is rounded where the trailer ball goes. The provisions for the license plate are on top of it on the drivers side just below the tailgate. I assume its not original, but I can't say for sure. It doesn't have any sort of light on it.
What I would like to do is replace it with a nice chrome one. Preferably a stock chrome one, but I'm not sure what will fit and what is stock, whether any have a light (is that a law) etc etc. Pics would be helpful. Thanks.

My old 72 custom deluxe (the one with the polished overflow) had the chrome one on it from the factory. You will need the bumper, brackets, license plate box, and light. Most any repo company sells all these. I don't know how Canada is but the states require a light. Sorry this is my best pic of one.

I think we require a light here in Canada too. Thanks Powell!

Here is the factory step and tow. Extremely durable and most of all functional. The "sport" bumpers look good but don't add any functional qualities to make your truck a "truck".

That bumper on the orange truck is almost exactly what I have! Mine is just more rounded around the trailer ball. It may be functional, but it sure is unattractive.

Not tryin g to hijack this thread, just wondering if anyone can tell me if the factory step bumper would be listed on the glove box sticker as an option and if so what code?
I have one on my '72 but do not think its on the sticker. Thanks |

That would be fair, I guess. They all come here, and we go there. Wonder if they would stay?

Hey Already Gone, you say that you are getting an ECE hitch for your truck. Where are you getting that from. I have breifly looked around for hitches here and cant find anything. I even tried through Grandwest out your way and they just laughed when I saud it was for a '70.

jesgord,
The RPO code for the step rear bumper is V43, I've got a couple of parts trucks with it listed on the option sheet. Bob

I had an old rusty steel diamondplate step bumper on my truck, with the step rusted off. I have a FURD bumper from a mid 80's truck right now and I friggin hate it. Sometime this week I'm putting the old rusty bumper back on the truck because I picked up some more diamond plate to fix it. After I get the step part finished I'm probably gonna paint it silver. Then when I get that done I'm going to weld a reciever hitch to the bottom so I can use a pintle hook adapter on it.

I was gonna ask about the ice coral pink then I thought it was a GMC only thing. It should say the color on the glove box sheet. If it did come on Chevy too and if the fact that every dealership got only one then that would almost double the number of ice coral pink trucks. Assuming there are as many Chevy dealers as there are GMC dealers.
BTW if you get a sport bumper you can use the licence plate frame and light setup frame the 70-80's fullsize GM van, they are a dime a dozen in junkyards, at least around here. |

yup...I think all the texas dealers did this...it sure seems like it anyways. Heck, some of the Tx dealers still do it today (in the Killeen area I saw plenty on newer trucks) My GMC had a dealer installed fugly step bumper that I ripped...it had the Knasas dealer name on it.
Have never seen that up here. |

Will the step bumper brackets line up with a sport bumper and be a direct bolt on, or do I need to buy new brackets and hardware? Also, would there be wiring provisions for a license plate light under there, or do I have to run new wire?

Brackets are different, all of mine have had holes for the license plate lights. There were a couple of different bumpers used as step bumpers due to most of them being dealer installed. The brackets you need will depend on which bumper you use. I'd try to find the one shown by CPNE up top, that's what my trucks with the factory bumpers have had.

My green K20 came with the factory step bumper which is listed on the glove box sticker. I was going to have it chromed, but three shops said it couldn't be done because of the design. I had it dipped and powdercoated in a chrome like color. It is one heavy bumper to carry around. Nothing like those aftermarket ones that you can throw around.

I see you can buy a kit with all the brackets, bolts etc to install a sport bumper. I think I'll just order that. Thanks everyone!

You will need new brackets and gravel deflectors. There should be a plug on your wiring harness to plug in the new light.

The first 67-72 I had was a long bed step side and the bumper on it , while still a step bumper, the middle of it was recessed so when you opened the tailgate all the way down it didn't hit the bumper. I have seen very few of those since and I'm keeping my eyes open for another one.
