What Ratio?
What is the laymens way to tell what gear ratio I have in my 72?

take the cover off and count the gears on ring and pinon. Divide large number by small number and there ya go.

Yup, and you get to drain the 33 year old oil, and check for metal chunks floating around too.

How about the "lazymans" way-jack up one rear wheel -put trans in netural-make a mark on drive shaft-make a mark on tire-turn tire 2 times while counting the # of times the drive shaft turns--little over 3 times= 3.08, about 3 3/4 times = 3.73 and so forth.

yeah, but then you still have old oil that isn't doing it's job.
3.08 wasn't used in these trucks, it's a 3.07 |

If it is a half ton that came with a 350, it came with 3.07s. If it came with a 307 or a 6 cylinder, it came with 3.73s. Any other ratio was optional and would be listed on the glove box sticker.
