Numbers in Tire Sizes
In relation to the post below. (don't laugh) What do the numbers in tire sizes stand for? No one has ever told me and I have never asked until now.

An example... 285/40/18
285 = the width in millimeters 40 = the sidewall height aspect ratio. In this example, 40 means 40% of the width (285) 18 = is obviously the wheel diameter ------------------ Current project: The "HACKstoration" 1967 GMC shortbed/fleetside, 350/700R4, air bag suspension, 18" billet wheels. Other vehicle of interest: 1957 Chevy Bel-Air 4dr hard top, 283/powerglide, lowered 3-1/2" in front and 2 inches in the rear. Take one of the rears on my truck, for example - a 275/60/15. (ignore the letters for now). 275 refers to the width of the tire in millimeters, 60 is a percentage of the tire's width and is a measure of the sidewall height (it's 60% as tall as it is wide), and 15 is the size of the rim it mounts on in inches - 15" diameter rim.
The letters you see refer to two things - speed rating and construction. The first is the only one you'll see changed most of the time; the second is R for radial and you don't see many bias-ply tires anymore, of course. Different letters stand for different speed ratings, like H, S, Z, or Y. ------------------ Project 1970 - soon to be seen at http://milhouse.treylis.org:81/

The letter stands for the speed rating.
"The tire speed rating is the maximum speed for which the tire is rated." Here's another link: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tirete...eral/speed.htm ------------------ Current project: The "HACKstoration" 1967 GMC shortbed/fleetside, 350/700R4, air bag suspension, 18" billet wheels. i just went through all this tire crap...
flashbacks of shopping for my cam... point of information: LT tires (light truck) have 3 plys in the sidewall versus 2 ply in tires that are rated P (passenger)... thats why you can pump LT's up to like 60 pounds... LT's only come in a 85 or 75 widths though... ended up getting P255/70R16's...

nroden, H78-15 --
H = load rating. A was lowest rating, but I'm not sure how high they went. 78 = aspect ratio (width to heigth = 78%). 15 = rim size, in inches B and Highway BB = I haven't a clue. Maybe tread design. Anybody else know?
