I came across a crew cab, 2wd 6.2 diesel for $800 bucks the other day. It would be night to get the whole fam in the truck so I started to wonder about the 6.2 diesel engines.

My father in law said he has heard of all kinds of bolt on stuff to really wake up the 6.2. I've also heard that they usually get around 20 mpg.

What do you think?

If it runs good, starts good you are ready to go. I would say go for it...
6.2 has a good mileage, around the 20mpg at normal driving.

no power, but other than that I hear their alright, I think they make less horsepower and torque than my 350

The 6.2 is a little lacking in the power department, but for a driver with an occasional trailer pull or off road trek, it has plenty. With my '86 K5 Blazer, 31's & 3.08's the best mileage I have been able to pull so far was 25mpg. I do get a consistant 23mpg which is a mixture of city/hwy driving and I average 200 miles on the road per day. I am really pleased with my 6.2.

Back in the '80s, a friend of my Dad's had a cool little Chevy truck, a blue 1984 Chevy C10 shortbed with a 6.2 Diesel. He got a consistent 28 m.p.g.!

He kept the injectors tuned and had very little smoke. It was a neat ride...

My ex-best friend had a 6.2l back in H.S. We had a lot of fun in that sucker... Seemed to have decent enough power and got great milage. I say go for it and if you don't like the engine you can always swap something else in once you ahve the time and money.

If I get the 82 crew cab truck I'll have to sell my 71 c20 to pay for repairs and upgrades.

once you get it started. open the rad cap. if there is any pressure or bubles coming up in the coolant means blown headgasket or cracked head. i have had a few encounters of both circumstances. and if youre not mechanically inclined it could cost lots takin it to the shop to get fixed. i like 6.2s my self but i can fix them myself to and have alot of spare engine parts kicken around

Is this crewcab a 3/4 ton? If so, it probably has the TH400 tranny and 4.10 gears, one of the most common setups that GM offered behind the 6.2L. This will give you good power, but not the best mileage. I would say that 16 mpg would be the realistic number, with a high of 18 mpg at best.

However, if it has the 700R4, you can get much better mileage. Or, if you swap in the 700, and change over to 3.73 or 3.42 gears, you can reach the 20 mpg mark. To get anywhere near 25 mpg, you have to get the lighter regular cab, SWB trucks that had the 700 with 3.08 or 2.73 gears.

I have a 84 jimmy with 33"s, 3.08s, a banks kit, and a straight pipe and I got 22mpg doing about 80 on the freeway the whole way back from Arizona. If you put a turbo on it you gotta straight pipe it, it sounds like a open header v-8 and a jet taking off.
