Question My Pointer is Pointless

I recently aquired a 90 2wd Burb with a 700R4?. The auto trans pointer over the steering column is not working. It stays on neutral indication all the time even though I can shift normally. I had the small dash panel under the column off today and poked around to see whats going on up higher but I was unable to get above the column.
Are there any tips tricks for getting it to work. Is there a broken or detached part?

Thanks, Tom

there should be a cable that clips or screws onto the end of the upper housing tube that moves with the shift lever, under the dash panel, but you can see it if you look under dash at bottom side or pass side of column, it runs up to the pointer and pulls on it, and is spring loaded to return back to P

unless burbs changed this in 88 alsoi, i thought they carried over old dash stlye through 91
