67-72 Chevy motor mount placement
Hello,
I'm new to the site, currently restoring a 69 SWB prostreet truck and I have installed the new 383 stroker and it seems to sit too far forward on the frame. I know there are two positions for the motor frame mounts front and a back. But I looked at moving the motor frame mounts to the back position but the lower bolt doesn’t line up with a pre drilled hole on the cross member. Please help. |

I beleive you need the I6 stands in order to get the bolt holes to line up

Thank you. I also hear somewhere that the first spark plug hole should be inline with the swing arm tie rod. Is that correct?

If you are currently using the "forward" set of holes, those were the "original" V-8 mount locations for the 327 and 350. Like CPNE said, if you want it to sit back farther use I6 stands. How far is your fan from the radiator now? Newer V-8's water pumps are longer than the original pumps, maybe that's why your motor "appears" to be too far forward. my $.02

The radiator (4 core) sits ~2-3 inches from the fan. So by using the front mounting holes I should be fine? No handling issue?

My truck has a rebuilt '78 350 motor in it with the "long" water pump. It also sit's 2-3 inches from the radiator. I haven't had any overheating problems or handling problems at all. The truck is parked now 'cause of a blown 700R4, but I put 6,000 miles on the new motor with no problems....hope that helps ya. Have you tried to bolt the tranny up yet? If it is in and fits well, I'd leave her alone...Anyone else???

Yea, the motor and tranny are in, along with the driveline. The driveline yoke sticks out of the tranny about 2 inches, when connected to the narrowed 12 bolt. My setup just looks different then some other trucks I’ve seen. I also replaced the entire short water pump/accessories with a long water pump and according pulleys and brackets.

Thanks, I think I found the problem my rear-end pinion is negative not positive. I’ll adjust the four link tonight to see if that reduces some of the driveline yoke play.

Just something to think about,putting the engine in the I6 position you'll be moving it to the back Approx. 3 inches.You'll gain some weight transfer,and a little traction,and move the center of gravity also.I don't know if that's an important thing to you,but thought I would throw it out there.Every little bit helps
