The oil bath air cleaners I have seen have no snorkel. The snorkel made it a paper filter element air cleaner. That might have changed in later years. But these are supposed to be 1967 NOS paper and oil air cleaners.

DaBurb did you end up buying that paper HD filter? That ran twice on eBay as it didn't get a bid the first go around. I was thinking heavily on it but then I wondered how to come up with the stack and the mounting hardware.

The 292 has 6 inch tall side covers. The 250 has 4 inch side covers.

Also, the fuel pump and motor mount are swapped places on the passenger side of the 292.

hotfun, I wish I had seen it the first time around. It would have been mine. As it was, I ended up in second place and will be forced to use the oil bath one that came with the engine or the 9" Cal custom finned aluminum one I have.

To answer your question stelth2002, if you had an automatic transmission and an I-6 (250 or 292) you got a full fan shroud (I did not know this till a few years ago myself). I got a beat up I-6 shroud from a local junkyard but it won't fit my standard trans radiator (the auto trans radiators must be slightly wider).

Basically it's design replaces the traditional paper filter unit. It incorporates a resuseable filter in a steel housing that resembles coarse steel wool. You soak the filter with oil and pour additional oil in a resevoir designed into the base. The oil-soaked filter traps particles the same way the paper filter does. In theory it does a better job and the oil bath units were marketed for severe duty applications.

The pros (other than nostalgic coolness) are that it filters better than the standard paper units, and it's resuseable.

The cons, more maintenance and messy. I would not recommend one on an engine you want to show. But if it's still used as a truck, they can't be beat IMO.

They were optional at least thru 72, never standard that I know of. Most people toss them in favor of the paper element style so they are not easy to locate. Again, paper element is the way to go unless you think outdated-retro is cool like me.

Oil-baths are the only thing that will work when ol' St Helens blows ash [again], a very handy item to have if you live near an active Volcano.
