BB P/s pump question
This is for anyone who has swapped in a big block: On original trucks I see a power steering reservoir used, but is this necessary when swapping in a 454 from a mid 70's truck? What did the later trucks use? Thanks.

The earlier trucks used the short water pump which did not allow room for the reservoir and filler neck, the later models had the longer pump.

So if I use a long water pump I can use a regular pump that will resemble a set up like a 350 would have? Thanks.

Close, the longer water pumps have the alternator on the pass side and the AC above the PS pump, so if you have AC it requires a little bit different pump reservoir that tips forward of the AC bracket that bolts to the front of the head.

There will be no A/C on this truck. So, I guess I am asking can I just take the complete mid 70's 454 truck engine and drop it into the 70 GMC I have?

Sure, why not?
It's all together and working in the later model truck. What truck it's bolted in to shouldn't affect anything. As long as you use everything as a matched set of pulleys and brackets off the later model truck.

BB with Long WP
I installed a 454 with a long pump setup - alt. on pass side and power steering. I used 72 BB motor mounts so motor is in stock location. I have very little space between the fan and the 4 core radiator. This set up is using a clutch fan and the clearance is TIGHT.
Without the clutch fan you will have more clearance but I recommend the short pump if you can swing it.
