look at these plugs

a while back my motor started running like garbage and then blew the lower rad hose off. i was told blown head gasket. everyone i talked to said if it was blown a spark plug would get steam cleaned by the antifreeze. so i took my plugs out and here are the results.
1 caked with crud
2 wet with gas
3 wet with gas
4 nasty but dry
5 black
6 nasty
7 black
8 smells like gas
it's a wonder this thing even runs.....
i was told by a couple people to replace them with autolite 25s. are these good plugs?

Autolites are good plugs but I'd put AC's in it myself.

i personally dont like autolite plugs, i wont even run them in a ford unless im strapped and have to. i would defintly put in AC Delcos

LOL. Reminds me of my Dad. When I was a kid, he owned his own shop and I ran parts for him on Saturdays. Whenever I went to get plugs, he always said not to get autolite. I never did. I always suspected if I had screwed up, there would have been a whoopin' for Mikey. LOL

is there some kind of reason? the guy who told me to run them owns a auto repair shop and has a truck he calls hammer....it has a 400 SB in it that is supposedly real nasty. what kind of delcos you run?

Ac's are just "factory" plugs for Chevy's. I've had decent luck with Autolite but almost always run AC's unless I just can't find them.
you'll just have to look up a number for your engine to get ya started and then work your way from there. AC heat ranges are smaller number/cooler plug, bigger number/hotter plug. Ya wanna run a cooler plug in a "hotter" motor.hat's not carved in stone though.
Stock are usually in the 45-44 range.

Do you know what the motor came out of originally? Or is it the original motor for the truck? Is it the 400 in your sig?
The plugs in your pic are tapered seat plugs so that pretty much eliminates the "original" motor from your 67. A 67 motor would have crush washers to sal to the head.
Is it stock? Mild performance? High Performance?
I can't tell you an exact number but if it's a stock motor it will more than likely be a 45 plug. Something like R45TS or R45TSX "R" stands for resistor, "45" is the heat range, not sure about the other numbers. "X" usually means extended tip.
Heat range example;
A stock motor would use a 45 (hot) where a high performance motor would use a 43 (cooler). Hotter plugs don't transfer as much heat to the head therefor retaining the heat in the plug which helps burn off carbon deposits.

Are ya confused yet, Or should I go on?!!! LOL

Your best bet is go to a parts store and have them look up the plug number for the engine you have, (or as close as you can get to the engine you have).

I use #FR3LS in my S-10! DON'T get those. (They wont fit)

it's the one in my sig.....77 truck 400 2 bolt main...has a cam and will have intake and carb....and sometime hopefully soon aftermarket heads.....

Just tell them that at the parts store and they'll get ya the right plug. Just the cam, intake, and carb shouldn't make much difference in the heat range. Whatever they come up with for stock should be good. When ya get those aftermarket heads ya might have to drop down to a cooler plug.

well i think for now im gonna passify tim and give the autolite 25s a try.....i was talking to him some more here and he swears by them....if they dont work it aint like they are expensive to replace...

my personal reason fo rrefusing to use autolites is ive never had any luck with them. i fouled out four sets in my 327 i used to have in the k20 in under two weeks, then i put in a set of AC delco and didnt change them again untill i pulled the engine and broke one off about a year later. i didnt do anything to anythign else in the engine other then the plugs when that happened.

Im not as experienced as some of these guys but ive always had good luck with ngk's. Ive ran them on my Vette,supra TT, Z tt and TA and have always gotten good performance from them. My mechanic first turned me on to them when i was trying to bring my tpi vette motor back to life. He races sb chevys and runs them on every motor he build. I figure if they can handle nos and 26lbs of boost they must be pretty decent plugs.

A few mechanic freinds of mine who are also into racing swear by NGK's too. my opinion ain't worth nuts, but these guys build motors for a living. But if you get enough mechanics in a room, there gonna disagree on just about everything.

As for blowing your lower rad hose off, check your thermostat. A lot of times if they stick closed, your motor will overheat, and the hot fluid has to go somewhere, so it tries to get to the rad from the lower hose. It's coming onto spring, and your coolant probably needs changed anyhow. I know that I'm guilty of not changing mine every 2-3 years like it should be. Put in new therm., lower hose, and coolant. Tune engine, and you should be good to go. Hope this helps?

Suprised no one has mentioned Champion plugs. They seem to burn OK, but they like to break off.
I've run NGKs in the past and they ran great, but in all reality, I think BOSH has to be my favorite.

I've run Autolite 25's in my big blocks for about 8 years now...after I was tipped to them by a drag racer who runs only big blocks. Before that I was an AC only guy. I like the 25's. Just my 2 cents.

there was no thermostat in it at the time of the blowoff........i put a superstat in it now.

Personally I run whatever is on sale for the most part. I have never had a problem with any of them. For the most part I tend to use Autolite. Change them once a year and always buy them on sale anywhere from .69 to.99 cents each on sale. Cheap enough that a aperson can change them twice a year for sh*ts and giggles if need be.

Welllllll............here's another opinion. I never will run Chanpions, only Autolite. I run #26 in my small blocks, #404 in my 402.
