Recommendations on a 700r4 rebuild kit

As I posted this weekend I got a mechanic here in town who is going to give me a free 700r4. I would like to know what's a good rebuild kit to use. He told me he thinks it's from an early 80's car, but not for sure. I know that the later ones are better to have, but free is free. What kit can I get to make it better. Nothing special. I think it's a mechanical speedometer. He saw it and it has a hole on the driver's side of it. He said that some kind of switch goes there but he doesn't know what it is. Torque Converter comes with it. I have a TH400 as of right now.

Sell that one and buy one from these guys...Cost you more to rebuild it with GOOD parts than just buying from 700r4.com. Not to mention the early 80s 700s wheren't much and have alot of weak lengths in them.

s&l68 is right , I think 83 was the first year and the worst.
to make a 700r4 work right most trans guys use the case and replace the guts with
4L60E parts. The trans I need for a 502/502, prices have be 1500-2000$,but I think
I'm going to talk to these guys there price was less than 1300$

Not a problem...I have used 700s from bowtieoverdrives.com/700r4.com and there are very good quality. Espeically if you opt for the ugraded sunshell and drum...These are probably the Weakest part of a 700r...I mean all of them...I would replace this piece in any rebuild of a highperformance nature...Believe me...You dont want to see what they look like when they come apart

Check this out...From 700r4.com...
Behind engines above 450 hp and 450 ft/lbs of torque output, the input shaft to drum connection point becomes prone to fracture and the spline sun gear section will start ripping off the sun shell. Our level Three Transmissions have the following parts added for increased strength and reliability above 450 hp and 450 ft/lbs of torque. Reinforced input drum & sun shell for optimum strength with 30% larger fourth gear servo piston. These components are specifically engineered to help prevent breakage in applications with exceptionally stout motors. Experience has proven this engineering to be correct!

Guys I don't have a high performance engine, it's just stock. All I want is something with overdrive and that gets better gas mileage. Nothing fancy. I thought someone had said one time that even though it was an older 700R4 I could upgrade the insides with certain kits.

Even then....The early 700r4s are not a good 'upgrade' IMO. I feel what you are saying about having overdrive and whatnot but the early 700s are weakkkkkkk....I wouldn't have one...That is probably the reason that the guy gave it to you.

One thing I said I had a TH400 in the opening thread, sorry I only have 3 gears, so I guess that means I have a TH350----DUMBA$$

You could have either a TH350 or a TH400. Both are 3 speed transmissions. TH400s are usually found behind big blocks and whatnot so I thought you might have a motor with a bit of HP

I'm going to go pick it up tomorrow I'll find out the year of if by looking at the stamp. My friend, the mechanic, doesn't know too much about tranny's he's just trying to clean out his place. He does have one out of a late 80's caprice he told me months ago he'd sell me for $25. The thing is that I talk to him the other day and he mentioned this one and I figured free is better.

I just helped a friend up here rebuild his 700R4, and he got his kit thru JCWhitney. It was NOT a high performance upgrade, just a stright rebuild. i think he paid $80. I thought the kit was ok, seals, clutch packs, new SS balls, springs, etc. The only thing the kit was missing that he purchased in addition, was the 2-4 band. He got a kevlar from a local tranny shop for $20 if I recall correctly.

That $25 would be well spent IMO...
