Exhaust thru the side of the bed?
I'd like more ground clearance for my tailpipe and noticed on Jan 22, 2005 on "TRUCKS!" they had a Dodge Ram they were modifying called "Little Red Wagon." Stacey cut a hole out of the bed, just barely lower than the bed floor between the bumper and rear wheel. He also put in something in the hole so the exhaust was not "floating" through it. I missed that part of the show. Does anyone know what he did or products he used? Has anyone seen this before? If there are kits for this, how much do they cost?

ive seen him do that on several different shows... in my personal opinion its retarded, why cut a hole like that in perfectly good sheet metal, and i don't care for the looks of it. but if you like it by all means. im sure there are things i would do that everyone would think was retarded with a capital R. i would go look at the trucks website and see if you can find any info there. good luck

i have actually thought about doin this except infront of the wheel well.. if you want to see more trucks with them, check out some of the stadium/baja trucks.

I know cutting the bed is not an ideal thing to do, but I want to have a higher tail pipe exit on a long box fleetside 93 truck. I hear you can't do dual exhaust without spare relocation. (and that's still low) I was looking into rear smoke stacks but it seems the only way to mount them is though the bed floor, (my friend did that, and someone else loaded mulch into his truck and started a bed fire) or fabricate mounts to the front corners of the bed and have stacks on either side. I thought they might stick out too far and look weird.
One things for sure, I don't like how the exhaust is "wrapped" around the rear tire. I don't want to crunch the tail pipe backing up, even scraping the bed would seem better because you can touch up the paint later. |

the first pic is bad quality, thats what i get for blowing up a small pic.. but anyways you can see his exhaust is through the side.
OR you could always run your exhaust like the truck in the 2nd pic.

for those of you considering doing it, here's a little tidbit you might not have considered. i know a guy who did it to a lowered S10, and it looked great, with the exception of one thing. the truck had to be wiped down at least once every other day, if not more. the exhaust coming out would leave soot on the bedside. and no, this wasnt a poorly running truck, it was a 2 year old '99 S10 with a dead stock drivetrain and exhaust (other than the exit point). try it on a carbed truck, and im sure the mess will be much more extensive.

i agree with jeremy, the underside of my truck is always covered in crap because my exhaust is dumped under the bed...

My 87 has straight 2.25" right to about 3" behind the cab. Smells like gas, runs like a monster truck, louder than H&ll! Makes the cops mad, but who cares.

I did mine infront of the wheel. Its up and out of the way from the Rocks.

Blazer frame with Pick-up truck body, had to make my own rear cab mounts. The exhaust runs through the front box mounts that I had to make also.

I was going to say that I would think hard about if you wanted to clean all the crap off your truck from your exhaust system everyday. But if you think its the best way to go with then give it a try and let us know how it turns out!
Yeah, I got straight dual 2" exhaust running to right under the cab and it is louder then shi^ doing anything above 20 MPH, left exhaust is down a little bit lower then the right and leaves a bunch of black soot crap and grime under there. -Later
