Should I haul it myself or get an auto transport to move it? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

We bought Tracey's (bagged74) '68 C10 short/fleet today. He hasn't got the check yet (FedEx) but he will on Monday.

We can either pay now to have an auto transport company move it for us from Oklahoma to Michigan (where we are moving to), or we can head to Oklahoma on our drive from Alaska to Michigan, rent a u-haul auto hauler, and take it to Michigan ourselves (we have an '03 Dodge Ram 2500 w/345 Hemi engine).

What would you do? Oklahoma is definately out of the way, and the cost for shipping via auto transport is roughly 200-300 more than if we pick it up.

We are already doing a 3000-4000 mile road trip from Alaska to Michigan...so what's an additional 1500 miles or so, right?

So the total cost of just having it moved is like $200 maybe $300 more than if you just went and got it? Depends on your patience, I "personally" would just have it shipped but if I was taking a nice road trip, maybe stopping to camp and site see on the way and wasn't in no big hurry then I might go get it, meet some board folks, etc.

IF THAT IS ALL IT WILL COST, MINE WAS $1600 (ENCLOSED) FROM CALI TO TN.

Or you could just fly or ride the bus down from Michigan and drive it back.

i'd say with all the work you have to do in moving the cost of the transport company would be worth the investment

Double check to make sure U-Haul will let you put your truck on one of their trailers, the last time I checked (several years ago) they said

Maybe you've already checked but if you haven't, you should do that first.

I would have the auto transport co. haul it. They haul it in a covered trailer so it won't
get damaged & even if it does they pay for any they do. That way you can just set back & cruise & not worry about towing a trailer That you hope is ok. Mike

We decided to do it ourselves. This way I get to meet Tracey in person, and I'll have the truck with us on the 2-3 days it takes to get to Michigan. I can do a little cruising with it once we've stopped for the night!

Good choice--movers of all kinds are notorious for shafting people. Deal with them only as a last resort!

Note of caution on the U-HAUL deal. I had a truck shipped from Alabama to California and picked it up at the shipping terminal to save $200. The 275/60's were really to wide for the U-HAUL trailer. I had a real hard time getting it loaded. I had to let air out of the tires to get them passed the U-HAUL fenders. Then, it was just as hard to get it off. Just something to consider. I did use a RYDER trailer once (and I had 275/60's) and did not have those difficulties.

We had the truck picked up last night (Saturday) and it will be delivered to my uncles place on Monday night. Didn't go with a commercial mover, went with a guy that hauls old tractors around the midwest. Email me if you've got any questions about him or how I found him!
