I'm thinking about security and other stuff.

This is what I'm scared of - http://atlanta.craigslist.org/car/62682698.html

This is less than one mile away from my house - and it's the third 60's/70's Chevy or GMC that someone has nabbed within a couple miles of my house in the past 3-4 months.

Some things I'm thinking about...

Theft...
- What are you guys using for theft prevention; alarm? Starter kill?
- For those of you with money in your trucks, do you have a GPS tracking or recover system in your ride?
- What do you suggest for theft protection for GPS tracking/alarms/immobilization?
- What are some options I have to prevent people from popping my hood and disconnecting my alarm?

Insurance...
- Are there special insurance packages and rates for classics?
- Is it possible to get some kind of "theft" coverage for my truck?
- Are there things I can look into to protect myself from vandalism and theft?

I've got some obvious concerns. A guy that owns a supposed "auto shop" at the end of my street was found guilty of running a chop shop over there a couple of years ago. I recently saw a 94-96 Impala belonging to a local car club member ride out of this place and never return. I see at least a dozen cars drive into the place a week and they never return - and the local cops aren't doing anything about it this time around. (Lots of funny smells coming from there too).

One of my coworkers lives about a mile away and someone tried to steal his late 70's GMC truck a month or two ago and it's in much worse shape than mine, so this stuff is weighing heavy on my mind.

If you have money in it then get it appraised. My truck was appraised at $12,000 and thats what Nationwide has it insured for.

my 67 lwb stays in the garage with the dogs and its valued at 5000 bucks thru haverty ins.....with no deductable and its got a kill switch located .....OOPS!!!!

I guess I should wait till I turn it into a daily driver to have it appraised and then insured. I found some really cool starter kill systems in Sport Truck a little while ago that are triggered by putting a fake cigarette lighter into the lighter outlet. Lots of cool stuff out there.

I need to get rid of my vent windows, install an alarm with glass breakage sensor, find a way to relocate the hood release and get some kind of lojack system

You know, sometimes I wish I lived out in the country. :\

If they want it bad enough they will get it.It really does not matter what it has for security things.they can all be dis-abled.

It is true that if someone wants it bad enough, they will find a way to get it, but you don't have to make it easy for them. They prefer to work fast, so if they see it's a lot of work, they will move on to easier stuff. I don't know if they are stiil around but years ago I bought vent locks, and still have them on my Blazer. You have to break the glass, or use a slim jim to get in.

There are lots of cheap ways to help protect your truck.Do an ignition kill. You can use a club. Fake LED blinking lights. If you are parking for a while, replace the coil wire with a vaccum hose, and take the coil wire with you. Fuel cutoff switches. Battery kill switches.

You can make it so they pretty much have to tow it to steal it, and if you want, you can get a gps system and run it off a seperate hidden battery. You only need it to work for a day or so after they steal it anyway.

Shop around and get insurance though. Nothing is perfect.

Buy a house on a dead end road, that's off a quiet country road, with a nice long driveway, nosy neighbors, and 2 dogs that bark at any strangers, I don't even lock my doors (course I figure they'd nab the 03 Lightning first but hey how are they gonna know the ugly green truck is probably even faster than that purdy new truck?).

If that fails there's a Colt 38 special full of hydra shoks nearby, and a rifle or two, if nothing else I'll put her on at least 2 rims before she gets too far away. Rims are cheaper than trucks!

I agree that they want something fast to get.Yes it helps to make it harder to take.My brother-inlaw had a76 shortbox cheyenne that was parked in his shop.The shop was 25 feet from the house with a large dog outside.The people broke in to the shop and dragged it outside.loaded it on a trailer and was gone.This happend in town.He and my sister were home at the time sleeping when it happened.Never heard,seen,and the dog did not bark.This happend 10 years ago.

There are a few things you can do, powerlock.com sells a good system that will not let your vehicle start without the special key, you also can buy lock boots for you tires. Just remember if someone wants your truck bad enough there going to get it, unless you guard it 24-7........

I think that's why it's important to have both a strategy to prevent theft and a strategy for recovery.

I've been looking on ways to prevent a person from stealing the truck, but also some way to discreetly track the track by putting something in a concealed location that will run independent of power sources for at least 24-48 hours.

At least your putting a plan together, A good place to put a device if its small enough is at the right rear upper cab corner, at least on my 71 wear the eec lines go into the top rear of the cab, also think of behind the cab light, theres some room there too,,,Im looking into the power lock option and tire boots,

Do you have a headliner in your truck? I don't have one inmine. I was thinking about putting one in mine, but ...

I'm guessing you could also mount stuff behind or around the gas tank (behind the seat). I just noticed that I have these big nasty pockets in my truck at both ends of the back wall of the cab (the area of the floor between back wall of cab and the door frame). I could hide a lot of things in there.

Mine doesnt have one, there is not much,to any room behind the tank,mine is out. There are not too many places to hide anything in these trucks,, might have to work on a strategy,,,,,,

All the firepower in the world isn't going to keep your truck from getting stolen. Do you think everyone who's truck gets stolen just sat there watching...thinking " if only I could stop them somehow"
Rip offs happen when your asleep or gone. Posting pics of fancy guns on a message board isn't going to help. They're just one more thing to steal if you don't take steps to prevent theft. Dogs are also useless unless they're in the freaking cab.
Alarm and disable and make it known to potential thieves a bust is likely if they go for your baby.

You are correct for the most part but after being burglarized TWICE and my wife's car pulled out of my driveway over the time we've lived here(~12yrs)... I found that my being a lite sleeper helps quite a bit. Actually the revolver action was enough to stop one crack head in his steps! He fell to his knees and we waited over an hour for the police to get to my home!
The police officer wasn't to thrilled about my home defense either but he understood why I have them.
No we don't live in a bad neighborhood but for what ever reason criminals like to target it...
