Need help confirming part number for year
I've got a 1976 Silverado and I'm trying to confirm if this part number for the tailgate is either 100% correct, or atleast will work. If its not does anyone have a line on the exact part number? The GM part number I've got is : 15628608 . I know the part number is for a tailgate, just trying to confirm its year. The picture of it definitely looks similar to mine, minus the chrome trim piece covering the indentation on the tailgate. But I haven't had the trim off mine to verify if it is also has the stamped chevrolet word into is as does the replacement. Thanks for any help.

IIRC, you can get any tailgate from the 73-87 to work on any other year, as long as you have the matching bolt on hinges for the bed. I put an 83 tailgate on my 73, all I needed was the hinges off the 83 bed. FWIW, try to get the latchplates and support straps from a later year truck, as they lock in and hold the bedsides in, no more tailgate flopping open on rough roads.

The Silverado fill panel is also different. The mounting bracket for 73-80 vs. 81-87 are a bit deeper. I think the recess cavity of the early tailgates are deeper slightly?
