Power steering in '68: need picture of frame dimple

I understand there are two types of 67-68 trucks: Those with the dimple or indentation for mounting the power steering gearbox and those without it.

Does anyone have a picture of this dimple or indention that shows where it is on the frame and what it looks like?

I think this is the only thing I'm still confused about with installing power steering on my ride.

I remember a member heated the frame up in that area and took a hammer to it. Worked out great.

Just so I can be sure - and to ask another question....

Orange square below is the dimple, correct?

I have both the dimple AND I also have the unit that you see with the green box around it. What is that?

So, wait - that's a power steering box shown, correct? I have one that looks exactly like it. I also have the bracket for the steering fluid resevoir and pump.

Is it possible that someone put power steering in my truck and just took the hydraulic lines, pum pand resevoir out, but left the power pitman arm and power steering box in it?

I'll post pictures later. If anyone knows the answer now, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for all the feedback in this thread.

Those clues and the double pulley alternator. Though your truck wasn't born with PS, it acquired it at some point. Here is a pic of what once was. Note the double pully alternator. I noticed yours has 2 belts for the fan/alt/crank, you only need one, the other groove is for the missing ps pump.

Damn! That sucks and also rocks at the same time! Guess all I need is the pump/resevior and the hydraulic lines.

I'm kinda wondering now, though ... if maybe the power steering box is shot...could be why they removed all that stuff. Might need to rebuild it. Haven't seen any rebuild kits anywhere though.

Some snake beat me to it. After you posted this, two other people apparently PM'ed him before me and snatched it out from underneath me

Heartless bastards. That's pretty low. Is this typical behaviour on the forum? :\

I guess it might be advisable to PM this information to the prospective buyer in the future*or* PM the seller and notify them a buyer may be interested.

Thanks anyways, CPNE. I'll go back to searching the bone yards. I've been calling people all week trying to find this setup. Pretty pissed off right now.

I appreciate the help.

Here,'s what I have currently. It looks nasty! Pretty gummed up. Here is a picture of the dimple and steering box (from the top) and another one from the side which shows the pitman arm and everything else.

I don't see where the hydraulic lines would hook into this guy, so I wonder if non-power steering trucks also had a power steering box? My steering box looks much diff't than the PS box shown above.

thats not power steering, that is manual steering.

A power steering box will allow you to connect two lines from the pump to pump in power streering fluid. You see that black unit above the alternator that cpne posted? thats the pump.

you see the first picture you posted with the color indication lines,
you see those 2 line going into it box, thats what a power steering pump look like.

another thing is size. see where the two units bolt in. Yours is shorter.

Oh, you don't hafta tell me. I can tell it's manual steerign when I'm trying to get this beast in the garage

I notice my box is shorter and not as large, so I went back a couple of minutes ago and edited my original post in the hopes I don't sound like a total dumbass (this is my first 67-72 truck, so bear with me )

Guess I'm still on the hunt! Looking for a kit. All I've got is the dual-pulley system and the bracket for the pump. Need the pump, hydraulic lines

One final pair of questions: The power steering setup uses a different pitman arm than the non-power setup, right? Is there anything else that is different in the front end other than that?

I just want to make sure I have all of the parts I need before I tear down the steering and put in power steering.

Okay, so I have a couple more questions:

Is there anything else I should perform maintenance on while I have this torn apart? Any steering or suspension components I should look into replacing (bushings, etc)? Is an alignment necessary afterwards?

BTW - Alexis - your frame is swweeeet! Saw pics of it last night.

I6 ps is a different animal than the small block version as there are a few different configurations. You need to make sure that the pump/pulley combo you get matches so the belts will align correctly. I can tell you that if you get Teeitup's pump and brackets, it will line up with your crank and alt pulleys as they currently exist. If you buy another I6, you'll need to swap them over. Do not get anything from a 292, they are different than the 250.

As for the PS box get one complete with the pitman arm. It'll bolt right in and mate up to your steering shaft and drag link. It's not rocket science, heck I've done it. You have a 68 so the frame is PS "ready".

As for the other parts I'd assume from the condition of your truck the FE suspension/steering components are in good shape. If it were mine, I'd toss in the PS then go from there. If you start tearing into the whole thing at once, you may find yourself more confused. If you do have to do ball joints, tie rods, etc, an alighment is mandatory. It is not needed for a simple PS swap.

FYI, here is another pic of a 250 PS setup in my son's 68 burb. Note it uses a single belt. This is why I say make sure whatever you get comes complete with brackets and pulleys, otherwise things may not line up as expected. Again, teeitup's will work with your current pulleys.

Thanks again, CPNE, you rock!

Let's just hope he's still got the setup. I can't WAIT to put PS in this thing. Practically dislocated my right arm doing a 3-point turn (erm, turned into a 5-point turn) the other day.

My tranny only kicks into 1st gear if the truck is at a complete stop (or partially moving? one or the other, haven't figured it out yet). It's a blast. :P

I think this is a sign of a specific kind of tranny, but I haven't gotten that far along yet.

That is a non-syncho'd 3 speed, pre-69. The best thing to so is to upshift into second, then slow down considerably to drop it into first. Ohterwise, she'll grind, unless you're at a full stop.

FYI, if you opt for a 69-up syncho'd version you'll need to swap out the column shift arms and driveshaft.

Sorry but I have to laugh at a little SWB 2wd being hard to turn w/o PS. I have a 72 4x4 with a big heavy plow on it w/o ps. Now that is a workout.

Gotcha. I would probably want to work on or replace the tranny before I got rid of the L6 motor. In fact, I'm actually thinking about keeping an L6 in the truck, as silly as that may sound. I have a temporary/donor L6/250 engine coming intomorrow (only $300 to buy with lots of performance parts attached) and it's going in when I get it home. I'm going to rebuild the original L6 while it's out of the truck, then mix and match parts when I finish the rebuild, then drop the original motor back in. Would love to do a tranny swap also, just gotta find something that will mate up to the L6. What else goes with it?

My daily driver is a fully loaded '04 Honda Accord . My previous daily driver was an '03 GMC Sierra SLE 4door with power everything. I haven't had a non-power vehicle since high school - my 1989 GMC S-15. It's just a little tough to regress a little bit!

Uhmm, no. You're talking to someone who yanks small blocks in favor of inlines. I have a 292 inline which I intend to throw in the GMC plow at some point. The 292 came complete with the PS setup, so I'll upgrade to PS at the same time.

Nice. Do you have a favorite tranny for the 230/250/292 L6's?

I spoke up! I sent him a message almost as soon as I read the post. If that's not speaking up, I dunno what is.

Seems like people should just recognize if you see someone is in need of something else and someone else recommends it, ask them if they're going to jump on it before you snatch it out from underneat them. Common courtesy - it's not that complicated.

I hardly know half of you guys, but I'll be damned - if I have a part laying around that's less than $10-15 normally, I'd give it to you. I'd ship it to you for free because I have the resources to do so without a heavy burden to me. If I know johnQpublic needs a bed and I see someone selling one, I'm going to tell him about it before I jump on it.

Unless I missed something and someone else started a thread in the past year or two asking for the same thing, I must be missing something. I just find it ironic that, low and behold, the guy selling the part just so happened to get all of the PM's right after CPNE posted a link to let me know someone here at the forum was selling the exact pieces I've been hunting for.

Maybe I'm just overreacting. I'm just pissed off. I would have paid $200 for that part. I spent all week calling junkyards looking for one, and had zero luck. Something drops in my lap here and two people at the forum tried to jack me when CPNE was nice enough to point me to one.

It's lame. It's dirty. And I would never do the same thing to someone else here.
