new GM parts....GM is out of there mind!

GM must be out of there mind

i just called to see what new fenders, etc would cost me to fix my truck up real nice......i called "Ballard Chevrolet" in Weston, West Virginia...

this is what they told me:

RH and LH fenders....discontinued
Doors.....................$545 each
inner fenders...........$176 each(but, LH discontinued)
rockers...................$151 each
cab corners.............discontinued
bedsides.................$867 a side!!!

is that nuts or what???

you'd have to win the damn lottery to use Genuine GM body parts..

When I re-did my truck, the body shop used Taiwanese replacement sheetmetal. I was told that it was nearly as good as the stuff GM was selling, which they said was made in Mexico. The only problem with the Taiwan stuff was the passenger bedside was tough to get lined up. Everything else looked pretty good.

yeah i know, a good friend of mine runs a body shop, he says that as long as the aftermarket parts are "c.a.p.p.a. approved" there high quality....i guess that means that the insurance company approves them for quality

here's the cappa aftermarket prices he gave me

Fenders...........................$94.25
doors..............................$128.70
inner fenders....................$38.35
rockers............................$15.60
cab corners......................$13.00
reflexxions steel cowl hood..$390

the reflexxions hood is good stuff...i put one on a truck i redid a year ago, it lined up perfect in 20 minutes...it was good and heavy too....i used his cappa parts on the same truck, and to me, it was all good stuff...

his rockers and corners were the thickest i've seen...and the price was cheap enough for my tight *ss

screw GM....

I had a hard time getting $200.00 each, for my NOS fenders and doors last year. Finally sold them to a buddy after he called the dealer to verify prices. I wish I'd kept them now for a "future" project. NOS sheetmetal will be like gold. Better jump on those fenders on the parts board,... http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=143323

CAPA Certified parts are not certified by insurance companies, they're certified by the manufacturer of the part to be a high quality direct replacement part.

I sold a pair of 73-80 GM fenders last summer, still in the box, for $250. I thought I could get more but I needed the cash for an exhaust system at the time. I was lucky enough to stumble onto them at a garage sale for $50 and another guy got them from me for his resto project.

I bought a pair of GM fenders for by Blazer a few months ago, and they weren't all that bad, I didn't think. I bought new hood hinges and battery tray at the same time. I bought aftermarket doors and inner fenders because I am going to have to cut the top of the doors anyhow, and they seem to be of OK quality.

I must have done the right thing and bought a few things back in 98. This stuff is for my 86K10. I got both front fenders, fenderwells, hood, headliner, lefthand box side, silverado emblems, and all 4 fender mouldings for right at $1000. Up til now the only thing I have put on is the new headliner.

What does the initials "c.a.p.p.a." stand for?

guess the price of sheetmetal parts is a supply and demand thing, I had some OE fenders, etc for a 72 that I tried for months and months to get rid of with no takers, advertised on the 72 board continously...finaly sold the pass. side fender, no dents, rust or battery acid damage, just like new...all I could get was $35, finally gave the box side fenders away just to save me the trouble of hauling them to the dump.

When my bro re-did his 84 he used all genuine GM parts on the front end, he ended up paying $250 a piece for the front fenders, and $375 for the hood. He ended up using cheaper bedsides though. He did have a problem w/the bedside, he couldn't get it to line up right, but it wasn't even stamped right(you know how around the wheelwells, its flared? well it was only 1/2 like that)it didn't really stand out, but if you look at it you'll notice it. And this was the 3rd side they had sent us because the other 2 had dents.

CAPA stands for "Certified auto parts association". CAPA certified means that a part is certified to fit the application which it is intended. CAPA is a seperate organization, not run by insurance companies. Check out www.capacertified.org .

If you are going to use it for a daily driver and not a show truck, I would not
use the expensive GM parts.

HERES MY STORY

I once restored a 70 c-10 SWB with all GM parts. I was young and single making a lot of cash at the time. I splurged for a $2000 paint job, had about $2000+ in GM body parts and interior accessories. That truck looked like it just came off the showroom floor. About 5 days after the resto I was driving through an intersection when some 15 year old kid in a honda ran a red light sideswiped the driver's side bed, spun me around and then a guy in a dodge rear-ended me and I went head-on into a light pole. Needless to say every body panel was thrashed and all the glass was inside the cab. Not even one NOS hubcap survived. People told me that it happended that way so I wouldn't get hurt. I only had a cut on the bridge of my nose. I guess if the rear view mirror would have broke also, I would have walked away without a scratch. At the accident scene people seemed to be only shook up over the fact that my truck was totalled, when they lifted the kid into the ambulance everyone booed!

I am now restoring a 69 c-10 and I'm using repro parts or inexpensive used GM parts.

Moral of the story;
the probability of someone totaling a repro-truck is way less than the probability of totaling a genuine truck (Murphy's Law).

Just my $0.02
Dano

Insurance

There are specialty insurance companies yo insure vehicles like this .It is only about $100 a year for a NON daily driver and you can recover the money for the good parts .Imagine what might have happened to you if the parts were thin metal repro pieces .I do not have a problem spending a little extra for better parts even if the only one who notices is me .Frank
