What do I need to do before driving this thing?
I have a 72 blazer 4x4 that has sat for a long time. I want to at least change fluid in both diff's, remove covers and inspect (and see what ratio). I also need new seals for the hubs (had to remove them to load it on the trailer.) What else should I check? I plan on rebuilding the brakes before driving it.

Make sure all your turn signals and lights work. I would do an oil change if it has been sitting for along time. Check tranny and transfer case fluid if possible.

My brother changed the oil and put a tune up on it trying to get it to crank, so I'm covered on that. What kind of oil does the tranny (3 speed) and xfer case (no clue) take. I assume the differentials get 90w.

check all fluids, and best bet is too take an easy maiden voyage in a safe area to find the problems. i found out i had bad brakes for the first time at a busy intersection with a day care center crossing the street

Use 80-90 Weight gear oil in the transfer case. I used some kind of ATF in the transmission. Can not remember exactly what it was though.

Another thing to do is to get on your creeper and with an assortment of wrenches go front to back and tighten EVERYTHING you can possibley get to.
You'll be surprised on how many turns will be needed. Grease the u-joints and slip joint too. Checking the front wheel bearings isn't a bad idea either. Just jack up one side at a time and rock the wheel top and bottom. Have fun. |

Might be a good idea to purge the gas lines w/ compressed air and get a cheap in-line gas filter. You never know what will crawl out from the bottom of your tank and gunk up your carb. Also take the time to flush the cooling system a take a peak at your themostat, it may have rusted shut.
