wireing, well now that was interesting!
A the first of the week I finished wireing everything up, except for the hot wire and battery cable to the starter. So day before yesterday I did those little things and patted myself on the back for a job well done.
You see I had already tested everything (except ignition) useing the LOW 12 setting on my battery charger, so I knew it all worked. Well I got everthing finished up, then because like I said I had already tested everything, I started making it pretty. I hid everything up under the dash. Screwed my wire holders along the frame, put a wire tie every 4 inches or so on the wires that run along the inner fender. But the headlite switch in it's place, along with the ingnition switch and screwed the gauge panel back. Gave a high five to my helper. ( my 12 yr. old son) and we set down to have a 7-UP. Then for some reason I decided to test it one more time useing the battery. What the? I lost brake lights, and the gauges stayed lit all the time, with or without the key on..... hmmmmm First I took the headlite switch back out, everything was hot except the PK and H post, I could turn the lite off by dimming the lights till the went completely off, but it had me stumped. So I thought about that while I went about figureing out the brakes. Blown fuse, so I put in a new one...hit the brakes...POP! I retraced the wires front to back, and couldn't see anything. Then I found the tiniest nick in the wire. MAybe it was grounding out? So I fixed that and tried again. POP! I walked around to the back thinking. Are the wires in the lites wrong? Couldn't be they worked! Then I saw it. I wired in a 4 pole plug to hook to our Tear Drop trailer. The 3 male plugs were setting right on the rear bumper. I moved that, put in a new fuse and Viola! brake lights!!!! Now those dang dash lites. Would you believe that fixed them too? How was a short at the back of the truck feeding constant power back to the gauge lights!? That will be one to think about awhile...but at least everything works now!!!! |
