firestone tires suck.
i have had a slight vibration when driving my car. thought i just threw a weight. today it start to vibrate more and more. finaly i pulled over to see WTF. dam if the tread of my tire wasnt pealing off! $#@%)$# there is tons of tread left, probably 80%. now i have to buy 2 new one.. and you can bet they wont be freakin firestone..

Yep, in my experience with them, what happened to yours is typical. In high school I put a set on my Aspen, and within 6 months 3 of the 4 had suffered separated belts. The previous owner of my mustang just put new FireHawks on before I bought it, and those lasted about a year before 1 separated and blew on me. I religiously stayed away from them until we bought a new Toyota in 1998 that had them on it. 20K later, 3 of the 4 had suffered from separated belts as well. And people wonder "if" the tires were actually to blame for the Explorer incidents? Considering 8 of the 12 that I've had have failed, I'm surprised that there weren't more rollovers.

I've never liked them much, they're cheaper and you get what you pay for. The parent company Bridgestone makes some killer stuff in the name brand. I've got a set of a/t's taht could outperform many mudders and a/t's on my 4x4, crazy tires and GREAT traction ANYWHERE. I love those bridgestones and will buy from them again, but no firestone.

I know the firestone contraversy was a while back but is there any way you could get them replaced at no cost?

If they have 80% of tread then you should have no problem with getting them replaced by firestone. You may have to make up difference of the 20% used. Depends on the dealer but if they do not do anything for you go right to the manufacture. I'm sure they would be more then willing to help out due to the bad image they received from there other tires.

Had the same problem with Remington tires twice. They replaced at no charge twice. I sold the car and it went to Belgium. Never have had that problem with BFG's.

Michelin for road tires and BFG for off-road tires. Hey Dave, I've got 265 75 16 Michelins on my 3.4 ton. They fit great, fill out the wheel well and the speedo is spot on.

From my experience, Michelins are some of the best tires you can get. We have ran them on most of our vehicles, and haven't had any problems with them. They are a good, durable tire. I'm running Dayton tires on my truck right now, and i like them alot too. My parent's '01 S10 4x4 has crappie Uniroyal tires on it, and about once a month we have a flat on them. We have had to replace 1 tire already. We both drive on the same road, and i doubt it could be luck that she has had proably 6 flats in 11xxx miles, while i have had none. It just seems that the Uniroyal is a weak tire. It will get some Michelins on it pretty soon...

That tire didn't exactly look good either. I run Firestone Wilderness AT's on my 87 and Bridgestone Ponteza's on my 72 and love them. My parents have run just Firestone's for over 15 years and have never had a blow out.

f@rd explorer ahhhh!...........I have low profile firestones in the front(which i really like).....and on the back i have a set of big michilans in the rear w/ tubes........every time i move the truck out the shop I light the tires up and they hold up.
The next rear tires i get are going to be mickeys Jack

MTDave2 -- What model and size tire? My daughter's Honda Civic has 10K miles on some H-rated Firestone Firehawk SH-30's, size 185-60x14. I agree with the above comments on Bridgestone. I have the Turanza H 215-55x16 on my Maxima. They are a great combination of wet and dry traction, and are still super smooth and quiet after 35K miles.

I agree about the Firestone tires being crappy. We had a set on our Explorer and they had NO traction when the temperature was below -10 or so. They got really hard in the cold weather and would NOT grip anything but asphalt. They also didn't last very long. Thank God they never failed on us before the recalls.
We've been running Toyo Open Country tiress since then and they are great. Very grippy, Long lasting, reasonable price and tough. They were top-rated by Consumers Reports recently. I'm gonna buy a set for our Burb soon.

This may be a bit off the wall, but I started with a set of Hankook tires for my short bed. They are Korean. The higher end tires really helped me on traction. They are the same design as Michellen, but significantly less expensive, and have served me very well. With a short bed, you need all theh elp you can get if it rains. TF

Just a side note...I had one tire from a set of BFG Radial T/As do that...but as a disclaimer...it was 10 years old when it did so. =P
I like the Radial T/As I've got on it now but they just don't seem to wear well. I need to realign the frontend (camber is off, it seems) and for some reason the rears act like they're overinflated but they're down in the low 20 psi range...
