hard to start

I have a 72 with the 250 6cyl. After it sits for a few days it is hard to start. Once it starts it runs fine. Do I need distributor cap and rotor? Points? Or is it a fuel problem? Anyhelp would be great. |

Probably needs a choke adjustment.

Most likey a fuel thing.How hard is it to get it fired up? I mean a dozen pumps or dump gas in the carb hard to start?

Definite fuel problem. Start w/ the carb and make sure that the fuel level in the fuel bowl is correct. Sounds like it may be set low. Also wouldn't be a bad idea to replace the float valve and accelerator pump diaphragm. Replacing the fuel pump will also help. You current one may be allowing fuel to gravity drain back down from the carb making it work to get fuel after it sits for a couple of days. i.e, carb rebuild, new fuel pump, check that all connections are tight and she should fire right up.

once it starts it runs fine, so does it restart fine if it's warm? If so, then your choke definitely needs some help.

your carb prolly needs a good rebuild it sounds like it lets the fuel drain off after setting for an extended period. do this and a tune up if you havent done one in a while and you be happy with the results 250's are great engines, mine that I got from Txfirefighter runs like a well oiled sewing machine just as smooth as can be.

Hard to start
Thanks for all the imput guys! The truck stars right up after its warm. So I guess it's a choke problem? I got this truck from kansas. the under carrige is filthy, so it probably ran around on gravel roads. I'll do the fuel pump, fuel filter then check the choke. I'm new to the message board,and have some questions about my truck. Hopefully I can write them done without sounding to much like an idiot.

When you first get in, put the gas pedal to the floor, then check to see if the choke plate is closed off. That should have closed it off. If not, then your choke isn't working. After you get it started then the plate should gradually open to straight up and down, once it's warm.

Install a manual choke cable and be done with it.
