Manual Disk how do they feel ?

Just trying to make up my mind. The stock booster looks awfullllllll. I am thinking ot going with manual disk's and using a mater cyl from a 84.

So is there a huge diffirence in stopping power between power and manual ?

Thanks,
Mario

its alittle to get use to if you've never driven a manual brake truck .. but after a while you wont even notice all the pressure your putting on that pedal

I had power brakes on mine, but the booster stuck out waaay to far, just as you mentioned. The pedal is pretty stiff, but is easy to get used to.

Don't plan too much on stopping for those yellow traffic lights . Takes a little more "oomph" to get the no-power discs working. All in all, I like the no-power discs, of course my right leg is the twice the size of my left, and I run in left-hand circles , but oh well.........

I have 4 wheel manual disc brakes and they are about as hard to mash as manual drum brakes. I really can't tell much difference but I am in the process of figuring a way to put power on it without the big bulky stock booster just to make things easier.

i have manual drum, and with a good motor and a normal torque converter i usually have to put it in neutral so it isnt trying to creep into the cross walk. i am planning on a 1800 stall converter so i think that will help. power disc is coming when i get off my @$$

New smaller dual booster w/MC

You should check out this small booster setup, it looks sweet and the price is fair. $149+shipping. I've bought new parts from this place before and they ship fast.

Also read the brake tech article linked to the ad, it's full of good information.

Cool I think I have decide on the Manual set-up. I am going with a 84 Master Cly and a Baer or Wilwood adjustable porportioning valve. I am also goign with stainless line and tube nuts.

When I get a ton of money I might go with a smaller sized booster. For now I just want to get it driveable.

i'm not sure what its actually called, but you could try and use one of those boosters that run off of the power steering. no big booster or anything just lines ran to the power steering pump(if you have power steering of course) i think it might require a special steering pump though, not sure, i bet someone else will know what i'm talking about. that's the set up that's on my moms '80 olds royale diesel, works fine.

I have manual discs. You do have to put a little extra effort in stopping but you'll get used to it. My gf wants me to swap mine over to power so she can drive it.

This would be hydroboost setup. Try the wrecking yards for 1 tons, sweet setup and is all bolt on, it works of of the power steering pump. Kind of ugly, but works very well. I have manual disk on mine as well, I will see how I like it when it gets on the road.

Manual disks work great on my buddies 66 Vette, but I have no idea on trucks that probabaly weigh almost twice as much.

I have seen a 73-80 booster on one of these trucks and it sits closer to the firewall but I think it had six mounting holes.

I have though about HYDROBOOST but it's a pile more work and new lines would be spendy. Then I would have to blast the box and brackets. It sounds like the manual disks will work fine for now. I need to get this truck finished so I can move on and start saving for a house.

Thanks for all the help.

heres a little trick....maybe you like it maybe you dont.
I've done a couple of them and I think they look nice....cost about $20 and some of your time,
1. Buy a stainless cooking pot thats fits snugly over your booster
2. Take off the handles
3. mark and drill out the hole for the vacuum fitting, pushrod and mounting holes.
4. Polish it up real nice or paint it to match..
5. mount between booster and master, try to get one with the exact depth or deeper, just trim it and use a door edge trim around the back for a nice sealed fit.

here is a pic of one on my buddies 32

can you tell whats odd about this engine?

I have manual disks on my truck, my wife drives it, and my daughter drives it (5'4", 110lbs), and they have no problems stopping it. I'll eventually upgrade to power assisted, but I'm OK with the way it stops, and I have lots of other stuff to spend my money on!

Distributor in the front?.........on a SBC?
The headers say SBC but the distributor in the front says SBF?

BTW, as far as the original topic of the post...
You really didn't indicate that this was a $$$ issue, but about asthetics...So, there is a way to have power brakes with a "remote booster". I converted a '34 Ford 3 window coupe (streetrod) from 4wheel drum to 4wheel disc. The master cylinder was directly under the driver's floor board. It was mounted to the frame facing backward actually and the pedal was on a pivot from the floor. The booster was mounted behind the seats........nothing visible from under the hood. In fact the firewall was a polished stainless sheet, totally smooth.

I believe that the SBC in that pic has been modified with a front ditributor drive. Not only do the valve covers say Chevy but so do the exhaust ports and lack of the Ferd angled plug. The distributor seems to be a bit off center for a Windsor motor as well. I'll wager an aftermarket ditributor drive, probably belt driven.

Just my $.02
