NP 205 Transfer Case Question

Maybe this should be in the 4x4 area, but I think the traffic here may be better.

Are all New Process 205 X-fer case's the same? Meaning if I have one in my truck now, can I buy any other one and swap it it? All of the necessary adapters would already be on my truck right?

There's on on e-bay here local. My existing one can't get 4 high.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

There are different spline counts on input or output shafts.
Good read here.

In 1980 the NP205 started using a Slip Yoke on the rear output.

I'm doing a conversion right now from a th350 to a th400 with a t-case that origionally came with a 4 speed manual tranny. No slip yoke outputs. Be careful when doing things with this t-case as it can get complicated in a hurry. Its not impossible but you need to ask a lot of questions. I hope I asked enough! Parts should start coming in soon and that will tell the tale.

Can't get 4hi? Dig into that sucka! I'll wager the gears and shafts are fine but the bearings are shot. My local bearing sales store sells NP205 bearing & seal overhaul kits for $125.

Besides, rebuilding NP205s is much easier than brakes.

You didn`t say what the 205 on ebay was out of.If its out of a GM then yes it can be made to fit.If it came out of a Ford (and maybe Dodge too?)it won`t work because the output for the front driveshaft is on the wrong side.

I think all 1980 trucks used a SY 205.

and it would be nice if the original poster would answer our questions so we don't have to be psychic to figure out what he's got

My 1980 Turbo 350/205 was rear slip yoke style which I changed to fixed yoke. My buddy just did a tranny swap in his 83 1 Ton, 4spd to Auto, the 465/205 had a slip yoke.
