While doing my rear disc brake conversion I opened up my diff. cover and found this.
I've never seen anything like it before.
I know it's a posi unit but what kind?

this is just the other side of the spool.

That's an Eaton Gov-loc. It is the locker option on the newer GM trucks. Is that a 10 bolt rear end? It is not original to the truck.

Looks like somebody installed the Gov-lok in your original housing. GM started using them sometime in the mid 70's. They work allright if you aren't a heavy duty user. Check the little gears inside to make sure none of the teeth are torn up, otherwise, should be fine.

grenade-lok ! oh no !! they were using them by 76 model year, no posi after about 75 is worth a damn from factory.

From what I've seen all the teeth look good.Nothing broken or chipped.
It's in my 12 bolt.I've got reciepts from the all the owners(I'm the 4th owner).I believe the 2nd owner had someone put in this "posi" unit(that's what the reciept says anyway).
It works well for me.The truck stays mainly on pavment so I'm guess I'm not too worried about it lasting.

They help fuel economy on the road and last pretty well if you stay out of the mud. If you do lots of mudding and spin the tires really fast you can tear it up. I had a parts truck with the Gov-Lok in it. I actually swapped it into my truck with a set of 4.10s and used it until a ring gear tooth broke. I then went with a thick Richmond gear to use my 3 series carrier which turned out to be warped. It whacked that gear set. I had the carrier machined and another new gearset. I got on it one day and hit a wet spot on the road. Wheel hopped just TWICE and snapped the Eaton carrier right in half. I have another OEM Eaton carrier in it now and it has been there for more than 10 years
