Vibration in drive line ?
I have a 67 SWB that is sitting on a 71 frame. This truck was a total restoration. I am having some vibration that I can feel as I drive it, the faster I go the worse it gets. It has a new driveshaft, that has been balanced and a 700R4 Tranny. It feels like its in my driveline somewhere, I ran it off the ground and everything looks ok. how can I tell if I have a bent axle? Wheels are spinning decent and wheel bearings feel tight. I just put this tranny in, could it be causing this? I don't think its the problem, just can't narrow it down to location, feel it in the seat, mirror vibrates, not in the front end at all. Its a tight fast vibration. Help !

Re-Check the u-joints or drive shaft itself.

Was the tranny mount a bolt in or did you have to drill holes to mount it. Also, did you use stock motor mount holes? Could be possible your out of line somewhere, but I'd check the u-joints, then driveshaft, and go from there.

did you put in a one piece driveshaft or 2 piece? Could be a midshaft bearing.

I put the tranny in, its a new one piece driveshaft, U joints are new and tight. I did have to drill holes to move the crossmember back and put a new rubber mount on.

Driveshaft alignment? Is it possible the angle is out of whack? Do these trucks have problems when lowered or raised where the driveline needs pinion shims?

if you lower or raise your truck, you need to check/correct the pinion angle.

That could be it. The driveline angle should not exceed 3 degrees. The angle could have caused the u-joints to go bad. jmo

First, is the vibration at speed? Or at engine speed? Take the truck up to 65 and put it in neutral, then see if you can feel the vibration, if you can then its more than likely in your driveline and or axle and hubs.
If you cant feel the vibration drop the truck back into drive, not OD but D and see if you can feel it now. If you can then it is probably something to do with the new tranny, as I believe you did not change the motor out I would rule it out right away. Did you change out your torque convertor? and if so are you sure it is completelt seated against the flexplate? I had a B&M torque convertor that would not center into my crank just because of the paint buildup on the convertor, caused a wicked vibration at engine speed. Just my $.02 |

Wow, Lots of info there ! I guess that could be it, it feels like a high frequency vibration. I am pretty sure it does still vibrate when its in neutral, have to check again. It feels exzactly like my ujoints are loose. Don't ask me how I know how this feels ! LOL

Don't know if this would cause a vibration but did you have the drive shaft made before or after you lowered the truck and is there any or enough movement (in and out) of the yoak at the transmission?

I had the driveshaft made after I lowered the truck and there is plenty of room for movement where it slips over the splines on the tranny. I did not bring my truck in I just measured the distance and had one made.

If my axle was bent would I be able to see the wheel move out of round as it was running ?

depends on how bad/where it's bent.shgould see unusual wear pattern on tire/tires.
best to pull it & check on a v-block set.

I have a question..
I have a 70 c 10 with 2.5 drop spindles with stock height springs in front and I have 3 inch lowering springs for the rear ( yet to be installed with my rebuilt rearent with my eaton posi unit).
I am using the factory spring mounts and factory trailing arm mounts. Should I be concerned about a change in the pinion angle? I plan on using my factory 3 speed manual and factory driveshaft (after checking and rebalancing). Am I ok since I have lowered the truck almost the same amount front and back? Truck is a lwb if that makes a difference. Thanks guys.

First thing I'd do is check all your tires for ballance and alignment. It's easy & cheap to do. It'd be a B*tch to do a bunch of drive line work and then find out you just have a a wheel weight out of whack.

I had 71 GMC short bed fleetside. Had the same problem. I did a engine & trans swap and still had vibration. Had the drive shaft balanced. Still had vibration. It ended up being a rear axle bearing. B.B.

Try rephasing the drive shaft. Unbolt it from the rear end and turn it 180 dg and then bolt it back up. Helps a lot of times.
