I just found this site and I must say I'm very impressed. I've been looking for a site like this for a while now.

I do have a question that's been puzzling me a little bit.

Last year my friend ask me if I wanted this old truck he bought from some farmers son. Of course I accepted but the thing is I'm not exactly sure what model my truck is. I'm almost positive it is a 71 but like I said the model I'm unsure of. Let me tell ya the things I do know about it so you truck gurus can work your magic. It's a 3/4 ton, 350, 2wd, AT(Really wish it was manual but I got the truck for FREE so I'm not sweatin it

).

I've already done alot of body work and still have alot to do. I've done the whole right side and its looking pretty good. I just ordered some Heddman headers, K&N 14x4 air filter, Accel 8.8 Spiral spark plug wires and a Tach(Find it annoying to not see my RPMs.

). I'm also getting a custom exhaust done sometime within this month.

My next project will be to take the engine out, rebuild it, and strip and paint the engine compartment.

I'd appreciate any feedback on what my truck model is and I'm definately open to suggestions on what I should do with my truck. So you have an idea of where I'm heading with it let me just say it's not going to be stock. I'm going for a newer, beefed up look. I'm almost 100% positive I'm gonna paint it black but I'm thinkin a midnight blue would look great too.

No unfortnately the farmer boy could care less about such things. There are alot of things that were chopped, hacked, erased, or destroyed all by this one guy. He had a home stereo system hooked up in the truck if that gives ya a clue

Let me see about getting the VIN for ya. I believe it's still stamped on a metal plate on the inside of the door frame.

I would say a 72 because of the rear view mirror is mounted on the windsheld. But the cab could of been changed or someone might of just mounted the rear view mirror on the windsheld. The VIN will tell you or the title.

CE134-Z112501

C= Conventional cab
E= eight cylinder
1 = 1/2 ton
34= fleet side box
Z = Fremont assembly plant
1 = 1971

rest is sequence number

I'd say either the vin or cab has been changed...it does look like a 72 cab as the inside rear view mirrors where on the windshileds on 72 cabs. The front bumper is from chev more than likely..no cut outs for the gmc lower singnal lights except 67 which both used same non-cut out bumper anyway.

So check if it has disc brakes up front...as that happened in 71-72

Do the doors have dimples and little screws near the wing windows to attach to the outter door skin..thats a 72 only door..theres lots of ways to tell what is what..and on this board you'll get the answers. Its a good start...and build it how you like.

why I think its a 3/4 ton is cause it has the 8 lug wheels and leaf springs on the back.

It has vented drums I believe.

Drums all the way around?...then its older 1970 or earlier.

I fits 8 bolt rims its 3/4 ton no doubt. Just letting you know the vin is a 1/2 ton range...unless it started CE234-Z1*****

Ok I found my title and on the title it says its a 71 GMC C1500. I thought the C1500 was a newer truck. Aren't the old trucks C10, C15 C25 and such?

This picture varifies that it is a GMC. However during my many visits underneath that truck replacing the starter and what not I noticed one side of the cab mount has one less bushing than the other...I guess its possible that the cab was replaced. The tailgate however says Chevrolet so maybe its sittin on a chevrolet frame..I don't know.

Oh and Rod yes, each door has a little dimple with a screw in the middle. Notice in this pic.

Not sure if this helps any but its got a heater but no air conditioning. Was it 73 they started putting air in it? My friend(the guy who gave me this truck) has an old GMC that I thought was a 73 and it has air conditioning. It looks alot like my truck.

Oh and the gas tank is behind the seat. Again I'm new to all these truck models and such so I'm trying to throw out any information that might be helpful to you guys.

Looks like a 72 to me from the doors,and mirror,and the grille is also 71-72 model.Looks like a nice truck for a project.And the price was right

Hey I have a question. Like I mentioned in the top of my post I just bought some heddman headers. They will be here Monday or Tuesday. My question is do I need to put any sealer, or anything on my gaskets or bolts? I want to make sure I install these headers properly so I can get the full potential out of them. I've never had to replace headers or exhaust manifolds so this is rather new to me. Any tips would be awesome.

Hello all, qtpie here, imported to Salina Ks from Lincoln Ne. Husband Ran Man and I are currently working on a 67 stepside longbox or at least it is for now, also have a 69 fleetside that we are using for parts, going to take a while though as no $$$ to do all we want. Have enjoyed your site and I am learning as I go, Ran Man is the body man and I do the engine. Also love to quilt and make wall hangings. (in my spare time.) HA HA I am sure we will be asking a few questions as we go.

Those Rivets holding the VIN tag on don't look like the factory rose rivets..... Hard to tell from the picture tho, looks like a good base to build a truck how ya want it without fear of originality freaks trying to kill you
