i have a 71 halfton 4x4. currently it has a 4 speed. i also have a 71 4x4 auto (350) chassis with the complete drive train, less the engine. im about 80% (maybe, i think) sure that i am going to sell this truck. ive had it for so long its going to be difficult to make that decision. anyway, if i do decide to sell it which drivetrain will make it easiest to sell...stick or auto?...i would appreciate all your opinions, thanks.

Auto, definitely. This is coming from a hardcore manual transmission nut

The stick shift is just going the way of the dinosaur these days.

well, if i am buying... i dont care how sweet the truck is, an auto transmission almost always makes me walk.... but, thats just one person

for the general population the auto will go over better

I'm a raging manual trans nut, yet I think auto also. IMO, men these days don't learn how to drive manuals the way past generations did. And most women prefer autos even more so.

But I must say, since you intend on building a truck with what drivetrain is left, you should keep what you prefer driving. You have to drive what you restore, right?

Would one tranny be more desirable to drive than another?
Any towing needs that would potentially warrant an auto?
Any long commutes with stop and go traffic that might make an auto desirable?
Chicks still dig a man that can shift a manual trans with smooth skill. A concern?

Auto sells.Also,I have them both ways.The automatic trucks seem to move along with the modern pace better.When I drive the 4speeder,it`s so much more trucky,if not tractor-like.I just take my time and enjoy the feel of driving a beast with a"throw-back/old truck"feel that most others will either never know or perhaps envy.

Personally I would never give my 4 speed up for a slush box, to me a truck should have a stick. Auto's are nice just not my cup of tea

The only time I would give up my 4 speed would be for an overdrive tranny like the 4L80E (and even then I would put a 5-speed in). I am currently putting in a NV4500 to replace the SM465. I have seen lots of burnt up auto trannys, I have seen very few broken SM465's. Automatics also run much hotter and take horsepower to turn. My $.02.

My daily driver is a 5-speed.
My truck was a 4x4 with a 3-speed manual. I took that POS out and put in an auto.
FOR ME the auto makes WAY more sense. You ever try to put a boat in the lake by yourself with a manual transmission? You ever drive in traffic with a manual transmission?
If I lived in a mountainous area I'd have kept the stick. I don't. I put in an auto.
If I didn't haul my boat around a lot I'd have kept the stick. I don't. I put in an auto.
All that being said I think the auto would sell easier and faster. Unless you live in the mountains and expect to sell it locally.

the auto will sell easier. personally i hate driving autos, my commute to and from work is 20 miles of open highway and 15 miles if in city driving and there is no way in hell i would go to an auto

My daily driver is a 78 1/2 ton short wide with four speed stick. I can't tell you how many offers to buy it I've had. The first thing everybody comments on is the four speed and how rare they are. No I have no idea if in fact they are rare but every one seems to want mine. I also like driving it.
