Exhaust Over Tranny Crossmember... Who has done it ?

I am getting ready to buy my hedders. I am looking at the Hedman Elite.With 1 5/8 " primarys and 3" collectors. (If you another option of what would work better let me know) 3" duals stainless manderal bent with a H pipe or X pipe if I can fit it and the Stainless Super 40's from Flowmaster. I was planning on dumping it in front of the rear wheels but still tucked up. I have a leaf truck so the trailing arms will not be in the way. I was just looking and it looks like I need to run a diffirent shift linkage. I have the stock style coloum shift I think the one from Lokar might work out well. The stock one seems to be in the way. I would like to keep the exhaust tucked up in the frame if possible. I guess I am looking for advice from people who have done this before. Any help would be great.

If you run full lenght headers, there isnt much point in running the exhaust over the trans crossmember,the headers are the lowest point in the system. I have run both Hedman & Hooker on my truck, & will say they are both good headers..........but, I prefer the Hooker comps. The collectors on the Hookers hang 2 1/4" below the rails on my longhorn @ the flange (the lowest point) . Still, I see no need to route the pipes over the crossmembers, & I have run under them , but tucked tight. My old truck has 2 custom crossmembers, 1 under the trans, & 1 under the rear of the cab , for the carrier bearing on the shaft. if you really need the ground clearance, you might opt for the 3/4 lenght Chevelle headers, then tuck the system up over the crossmembers. just remember that the shorter headers will trade off a little low /mid tork that we all need in a heavy truck. best of luck,69L

The headers I was refering to, are listed for the truck(69090 Hedman, & 69092 for the stick shift guys). these headers have the dr side collector pointed down(hangs low). it is my understanding that the elites (to fit the truck app), are the same deal, but just heavier 14 guage tubing. the hooker comps(# 2452 painted) are a 16 guage tubing (heavier than most), & the tuck up nice for a full lenght set.....still below the rails tho. if you want above the rails, you still are looking at a 3/4 lenght CHEVELLE header, whether it be Hedman, Dynomax , or what L

You got me on that one, I see the # listed on Hedman's site....but I cant see the pics on the headers! do they dump @ a 45degree angle, or are the collectors pretty much parallel with the frame? remember that the 4wd is a bit different than the 2wd(also in header selection)....69L

Sorry, I should have mentioned they are the chevelle/camaro shorty 3/4 length.


Also what would work best center in/out or offset in center out ? What are you using longhorn ?

I really dont want to see the exhaust below the frame if possible. I also don't want to hear it grind on the ground. I am pretty low and would like to keep my options open as to air ride some day down the road.

I am running offset in/ center out 50's Flows on my longhorn, & that seemed to work pretty well with the mufflers laying flat. the system is 2 1/2" from the collectors to the "butt", has an H pipe,& exits through the rear bumper. its all custom bent, no Mandrals ......no hard bends either. My youngest son gave me a hand with the tail pipes last summer , when i was still in the muffler shop..........69L

I ran my exhaust through the frame using shorty headers and 2 1/2 pipes. I had to cut the rear crossmember out some so I could continue throught the exhaust basically cutting out a 3/4 circle were the rear crossmember v's by the edge of frame then 2 45 deg. angles up and back then 40 series flows. I'm thinking of running the tails over the frame and using the through the bed cutouts like copperhead in front of the tires. With exhaust that close to the cab run some sort of heat shield because it gets warm. I'll try to get some pics tommorow.

Pics would be great. What did you do for a shift linkage ? I have a 4" circle cut out in the trailing arm crossmember so there is lots of room.

What shorty hedders are you using ?

Just for the record. Hedman Chevelle shortys Dont fit a small block in the 8 Cyl position. Part number 68600 will not work.
